Case Failure Rem 700 - Need Opinions

The Rem bolt head is copper brazed to the bolt body at about 2000° F. Then the bolt assembly is heat- treated. The tempering temp is approx. 900° F . (based on the hardness of the finished bolt) So, heating up to 900° will have no effect on the bolt hardness. RWO

    Scope mounting

I have never seen a Weaver style ring that would not fit a Picatinny base, but I guess it is possible with sloppy enough tolerances. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=10724/guntechdetail/Picatinny_Rails__Weaver_Rails__What_s_The_Difference_ RWO

    Burris Signature Zee Rings Screw

The last set of Burris ZEE rings I bought had oversized tapped holes for the base clamp screws. This made the 6-40 threads very shallow to the point that they stripped with only moderate torque. I drilled out the holes and tapped for an 8-32 x1" SHCS. This gives good clamping force and...

    Blueing question Oxynate 84

I read somewhere that the stainless blackeners work by oxidizing the surface chrome to chrome sulfate. If so, it stands to reason that acid passivation to remove most of the surface iron would expose more chrome and less iron, thus obtaining a darker color. Abrasive blasting might work by...

What digital 1" micrometer to buy

Started with dial calipers 4O years ago and switched to a Mitutoyo digital about 20 years ago. Never looked back. I recently bought a new Mitutoyo because of the absolute feature and the old caliper became intermitent. I could have repaired it, but a new one was only about $40 more ( good...

    import lathe motor replacement/upgrade

I recommend a 3-phase motor, VFD combo. An industrial duty TEFC motor can often be found on eBay for cheap. Recommend automationdirect.com for a VFD. They have good prices and excellent tech support. A sensorless vector capable VFD will cost a little more, but will give more low speed...

    Old time bedding question!

For removal of the resin from the barrel, I have had good luck with this method: Wrap the affected area with two thicknesses of paper towel. Soak it with MEK and immediately cover completely with aluminum foil sealed to the barrel at both ends with tape, rubber bands, etc. Make sure the seam...

Has anyone replaced the motor on their JET 13-40 Lathe?

I replaced the original 2 hp motor on my Jet 13x36 with a NEMA frame, 2 HP, 4-pole, 3-phase. The Jet motor sheave bore was slighty larger than the new motor's shaft, so I made a sleeve and a stepped key to fit it to the new motor. It all went together nicely and the with a Hitachi VFD...

Could use some advice on an older Jet BDB-1340 lathe.

If it was made in Taiwan, go for it. I can't speak for the Chinese machines of that vintage. My PBD-1336( Taiwan) was made in 1985 and I have been happy with it. It really turned out nice when I put a VFD on it. RWO

    Firing Pin Energy Testing

Sometime in the distant, dark past there was an article published on energy testing rifle firing pin mechanisms by dropping a small steel rod of known weight down the barrel and measuring how high the firing pin would drive the rod on firing. IIRC the author tested a dozen or so different...

How does a VFD integrate with manual lathe and mill speed functions?

I beleive the need for "inverter duty motors" on the typical home shop or gunsmith shop lathe or mill is greatly exagerated. The reason is that the duty cycle is very low and the motors themselves are very seldom if ever run at rated load for more than a few minutes. Now, for continous...
