Scope for new rifle

I am contemplating the purchase of a Savage mod. 12, in .260 rem. I doubt that I will ever use this rifle in competition, but I would like to be able to shoot accurately at very long range, say 500+ yards for my own enjoyment. My current mod 12 in .223 shoots regularly < .5" at 100, and sometimes, rarely, in the .1s. I have a 36 Weaver on top. I would like opinions on the following:
What power scope? Should I get a variable in 8x32, or get another Weaver 36?

What reticle is best for very long range shooting? Dot, crosshair, BDC?

Recommendations of brands and power priced below $1k. Thinking of Nikon Monarch, Weaver Extreme tactical, et al, and other similarly priced scopes.

You guys ought to know best. Appreciate your advice.

i dont think i would pick 260 if i wanted to shoot both ACCURACY and LONG DISTANCE.

just my 2 cents worth

Get the rifle in 6BR. As to scope, I recommend you take a real hard look at the Sightron SIII 8-32. There is no "best" reticle, nor best scope, nor best rifle, nor best chambering for that matter. However, I think 6BR is a way better choice than the .260.

Calibre & scope

I agree with the others on the 260. I have a trued and sleeved Rem 700 in 243 and 25/06 for long range varmint shooting. A 6BR however would provide greater accuracy. My 222 and 243 are fitted with 8x-32x NXS nightforce scopes while the 25/06 sports a 12x-42x.

The reticles I prefer are CH2 type. Although you can loose the crosshairs against dark areas the illumination usually corrects for that. I found this combination works pretty well but might not work for someone else as there isn't any perfect combination.

Hey everybody, first post here!!!

To answer the OP, i have a Leupold VXIII 6.5x20x50 on my 6br and have a Leupy VXII 6x18x40 on my 300RSAUM. I stick with Leupold because i've never had a problem with them, i buy what works for me. But if i was to go with another scope and staying in your budget, i'll try a Sightron, Vortex and maybe a Bushnell. If i could spend more, for target shooting it would be a Nightforce...without a doubt.

Nightforce v March

In my opinion for weight restricted short range BR the nightforce scopes are too heavy. In those instances I use March because of the power range offered as well as the compactness and weight.

For field use where there isn't a weight restriction other than what you are prepared to carry I use the NF. An 18x scope isn't of any use to me these days with ageing eyesight because I need at least 25 power to see the bullet holes in the target at 100 yards and around 30x at 200 yards. Also being able to see the point of impact in the field if you miss means I need more power than 18x also. No point in taking a second shot by holding in the same place when you didn't see what direction the shot went.

Nothing at all wrong with a 260 remington. I have had both a 6.5 creedmoor and a 260 remington that would rival most any chambering in the accuracy dept. If you want something a little bigger to shoot long range with, then i think a 260 remington is the ticket. Good brass available, and plenty of load data around. Let me know how it goes. Lee
