Here are the match results from the Briar Hail Memorial match at Shelby County this past weekend (link below).

It was very hot, with some sporty but manageable conditions all weekend.

We had a tremendous turnout for our little club, with 30 shooters, including SIX shooters competing in their first NBRSA registered match!

HOF shooter Lee Hachigian came away with the 2-Gun win. Congratulations Lee!

Big shout to all the great sponsors that provided some amazing prizes for the match!

@B_Rob85 Brian, what's the secret to the great turnout and all of the new shooters? Is it the prizes? Local advertising? Gun club promotion? How do you do it?

Thanks - Jerry

This would be a great question for the guys attending. My guess would be it’s all of the above. The prizes are nice, and promoting it on forums and social media sites certainly helps. Word of mouth is probably the best form of advertisement, and if people don’t have a good experience they’re not going to come back, let alone bring others with them. This isn’t all me. It’s the result of a great regional director, lots of awesome shooters in the region bringing folks in and mentoring them, a team of volunteers at the club that make you feel welcome and provides a good experience when you come out. That’s what it’s all about.

Jerry,

I can’t speak for everybody, but I was one of the new shooters in attendance. I have been competing at club matches for a few years, and that has drawn my interest into the NBRSA. The Shelby County range is close to where I live, so it was an easy match to attend.

I shot at the Super Shoot last year. The shooters there were so much fun to shoot with and helpful that I wanted to compete with them again. By attending this match I was able to catch up with several shooters I met at the Super Shoot.

The NBRSA Eastern division has a drawing for prizes at the end of the year based on attendance and new shooters brought to a match. I think it requires 4 matches to get 2 tickets in the drawing, but “bringing a buddy” who is new to NBRSA is worth 5 tickets alone (Johnny got 10 tickets for the drawing in this match). I think that is helping encourage shooters to bring new faces along.

I really think the club level matches are essential to keeping the registered divisions going. If I were a new shooter attending an NBRSA match with no equipment I probably would have lost interest instantly. The cost of equipment, rifle, and scope would have turned me away. By starting slower at the club level I was able to acquire my equipment over several years. I started in a factory class and worked up to custom rifles.

I think it would be helpful for NBRSA shooters to attend club matches local to them to help introduce themselves and support the sport. New shooters would be more likely to attend a registered match if there is a familiar face at the match and somebody they know is willing to help them out.

It was my first match also, first group match of any kind I had shot, I was amazed at the work it took to put that match on, but it was a great weekend of fun and meeting some of the nicest people. I’m definitely hooked been upgrading equipment since the match and motel is booked for the match in Oct.
