Return to battery

When I push the gun back to battery the POA is about 1½ lower than the original hold point. Windage is just right. I am using a Farley w/Edgewood front & rear bags. Rear is the mini Gater. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1½ lower

As in 1 1/2 inches..?

Are you pounding the stock into the rear bag..? Though typically if not the POA goes up on RTB... But..?

Another thought... Is your co-ax set up with light tension..? If so go a little tighter..

Yes inches......Yes pound butt into rear bag.......front rest bag tension is quite snug (sise to side) just allowing the rifle to be lifted out of the bag...

I was wondering if it had something to do with the hardness of the bags.

I would guess that you have so much sand in your rear bag ears that when you fire the rifle it wants to pop out of the ears a bit, and the tension in the ears won't let the butt settle down to the level that it started at.

If it is 1 1/2" lower with the joy stick in the same position then it is the rear bag.
I have had this problem before with 2 different causes.
1. The ears were so close and hard that after a shot the butt rose up in the ears each time. Pounding them down didnt keep it down.
2. The other was settling in the bag itself because I forgot to pound the bag down on the bench. I was in too big of a hurry to set up and forgot to come back and check every thing.

Shinny- What type of sand is in the bag ears, front and rear? Do you have the problem whether it is wood or concrete bench top. You only pound the butt stock once into the rear bag during initial set-up? i.e. you are not pounding it after EACH shot, are you? See you at Sulphur Springs?

Just had to remedy this at my last shoot. Using a new bag and thought it would take a set but it didn't. To much sand in the ears. Drain a little and try, then drain a little more.

Can try with a non joystick front rest. If it still occurs, then it is the rear bag as discussed. If it goes away with a different front rest, it is something to do with the front rest.

I've found I stabilise the rear bag easier if I push the ears apart with the heel of my hands before muscle the butt in.

Far as I'm concerned, Boyd nailed it in post #4. It's sad, but with sandbags, it is my experience that "returning to battery" is in conflict with "shoots smaller groups."

Try this. Once you've gotten a bit of sand out of the rear bag, go ahead & slam it down on the bench to get it flat. Now squeeze the sides of the base a bit, to "fluff it up"; to get things little loose. After each shot, again squeeze the bag to come back close to the original elevation --close is fine, finish getting on target with the joystick. (Or just squeezing, if you're up for that...)

I'll bet that if you fire a couple 10 shot groups this way, and another couple 10-shot group as you're now set up & shooting, you'll find the fluffed & refluffed bag shoots smaller. Not quite as quickly, but smaller.

Over time, (1) you'll get the amount of sand in the rear bag base & ears about right, & (2) develop an instinct about how much to "fluff" things, so it won't slow you down much at all.
