Live center rings

I know Jewell made some nice 1" ones in the past and Burris makes some now but not for a Davidson style base.

Other than those 2 is there anyone making live center rings now a days?

I know the Burris rings flat work if you can use a Weaver style base. No marks on your scope and no lapping and if you need more adjustment they will give to you. The down side they are heavy..... jim

There is also another down side to these rings. I put a pair on a 375 ultra mag. and a few days later the customer came back claiming to have run out of elevation adjustment. He was shooting into the ground not far from his bench. After a quick check it became obvious that the recoil was enough to have actually bent the front weaver base up about 20%. Both rings behaved like a pair of ball joints! The base was a weaver aluminum front extension base. A steel base fixed things.

Now that's some serious recoil! I woulda thought the screws would have stripped out before the base would bend. Certainly dovetail bases would not be appropriate for that rifle.

How is that a downside to the rings?

Burris insert rings come in weaver style and leupold style. The biggest mistake I have seen is people do not clean the inside of the rings and the inserts with rubbing alcohol before mounting.

Dick, You are right there and no ring marks and no lapping and they hold a NF weight with out problem and you don't have a lot invested...........jim

I have recently posted regarding Burris Signature Zee rings in another thread. These are mostly the only rings I use. I always use them on Pitinney rail bases when possible. Even the cheap P. Rails are better than the Weaver bases. I have installed a few hundred in recent years and have not had a problem. Several instalations have been on heavy fast recoil rilfes. On these it is better to epoxy bed the bases.

Hovis's point regarding the cleaning is good advise.

I have had no problems with using only two rings. If you are worried about it add a third ring. The Pitinney rail has a lot of slots.

Just to set the record straight I'm accustom to degreasing all rings I install. My mistake was using an aluminum extension base. A steel one held! If you have a screw on each side of each ring it can't happen. I have used quite a few of these rings with good results. Just thought this was an interesting exception.

Martin: In a 'normal' centerfire rifle, the scope experiences around 9 g's in that first instant of recoil. In other words, the scope at that point 'weighs' 9 times more than it actually does on a scale. In your example, a big azzed 375 Ultra Mag, it was probably quite a bit more than that.

A local hunter with a 338 Ultra peeled the rear scope ring loose from the base...it was a standard Leupold/Redfield style. I advised him to get a set of Talley LW one piecers and have them bedded to the reciever. No problems since then.

That big stuff can be brutal on stuff, can't it? -Al

Al: You've got that right! -Martin

I had octopus tell me to use the burris sinature Z rings on my Hall 6ppc. I didnt think it would be right so I called Alan Hall and asked if he had some of the rings he makes he would sell me he told me he hadnt made any in a while, just use the burris Z rings he thought they worked better anyway. The way the aluminum bases from weaver are all hollowed out I can see how they would bend so I used the steel bases on mine also.

Properly fitted and attached Weaver bases are fine on a PPC I used them for many years.
