Checking ammo is always a good idea

When I got my first 308, I bought a box of Rem Match 168gr, to test out the used rifle. Just for chuckles, I ran them through my vblock/dial runout gauge. Found 3 that were .010 out, and one that measured .022" runout. Back around 10 years ago. Lapua cases, Forster seater, and Lee collet sizer fixed all that.

Checking Ammo

I know folks around here reload extensively if not exclusively but look what I pulled out of a box of factory ammo. In order not to slam an identifiable manufacturer, I can't say exactly what cartridge this is. However, I thought it was a good reminder to always look at my ammo before I close a bolt on it. How often does this happen with standard chamberings from major manufacturers, anyway?

If that is a 223 rem or 5.56 Nato, I have one I picked up at the range about 2 months ago. I'll look at it tonight and post something. The bullet itself is identical, but the round is normal and could be shot in an AR. I keep a lot of found rounds (1 or 2 of each) because they can be very interesting and good for conversation starters.

It is not one of those cartridges. Unfortunately, my observation of the way this forum is run is that pointing out errors by a company or individual 'smith gets threads deleted. Thus, I can't say what cartridge it is...because only one company still makes this cartridge.

I will say that it's one of the majors and they've been nothing but courteous and professional about the whole thing.

It looks like a 222 mag early in a run that was loaded/crimped in a machine that was still set up for .223,,,,and from the pickeld-splotchy patina of the brass Im a guessin its Remington,,, hows that for 20 questions....Roger
That was only two questions. You got one right and one wrong. :)

I haven't been mean-spirited towards the company. They make a zillion rounds a year and one bad one is no indictment. They've been professional about the whole thing. In this case, I don't think it should be considered a personal attack to answer both your questions. However, moderation standards for this board have consistently been enforced where pointing out individual companies or individuals is prohibited. I'll only answer your questions if Wilbur says it's OK.
