22BR Question

What should the length and trim to length be for the 22 BR? I ask this question because of a conversation I had with Jim Hart (Hart Rifle barrels). I was telling him that I trim to 1.510 based on reloading manuals that I have and published specs that I have found on the Web. Jim told me that he tells his customers not to trim at all after necking down, because the reamer he uses has a longer neck. He was telling me that the 1.520/1.510 size was originally based on the old 6 MM BR Remington which is shorter that the 6 MM BR Norma. His belief is that most reloading data showing the 1.520/1.510 size are based on this old spec and should be updated. What are the thoughts of others?

Thanks,

Ed

My thought is he is exactly right.

It all depends on the reamer that was used to cut the chamber. But most reloading manuals are based on the original cartridge and most rifles around these days are actually 22 BR Norma which is longer.

BTW I have been shooting 6 and 22 BR since 1983

The trim length on the BR Norma case is 1.550" (max length 1.560"), so if you have an untrimmed Norma or Lapua BR case and it'll otherwise fit your chamber (FL size the case) see if the long case chambers and extracts easily. If the case mouth isn't bent inward then I'd trim to 1.550".

If I'm wrong it wouldn't be the first time.
