Camp Maria Yelm WA. USARB June 9th 2018 Match Report

On June 9th 2018 the seven shooters that came to shoot at the match at Camp Maria found out first hand why I named the range Camp Maria! It sits west of Mt. Rainier and the base of the Cascade foothills with the Nisqually river on the north within a few miles. Just to the south lies the Deschutes river Vail, Bald hills and the Skookumchuck river. To the west, north west is the Puget Sound, Olympic Rain Forest
and Hood Canal. To the west, south, southwest is the Capital Forest, Black river and the Pacific Ocean. The Yelm Washington area is at the highest point of elevation on the rail road line between Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon. To the poor shooter at this range it stands for a lot of bad winds of every kind. Out west they call this kind of winds MARIA.

That was a good size shooting crowd...Congratulations!...

It seems to be that "El Niņo" or "La Niņa" or some "Mars" windy conditions have affected all of us shooting outdoors so far, not many 250's and 249's to date.
We've had 5 consecutive wind storms in 2 weeks impeding any kind of shooting, then when there is no wind it rains and our winter just ended last May.

Thanks, we really do have a group of good shooters here.

I find that spotting for others much easier then spotting for myself. In USARB I am spotting for myself. Here at Camp Maria the wind pattern changes much faster and more often then most ranges in the Puget Sound. You have to be good at moving fast between your wind flags with your readings and scope to have a chance for trigger time on target to make a good shot and high score. It's a dance you have to do here to shoot a good score at Camp Maria.
