.22 Rimfire zero at 200 meters

    G'day.

My local (Australian) club .22 rimfire comps are usually at 25m and 50m (open air).

The competition blokes have devised a 200m 'fly shoot' for .22 rimfires only. I want to be competitive, so using standard velocity rimfire ammo (about 1,100 fps), what sort of bullet drop can I expect at 200m? Sporting rifles only btw (no heavy barreled specials).

I have access to reasonable quality ammo (RWS, Lapua etc). I looked for an online calculator, they are great for a .223 or a .338 but could find nothing for the humble .22 rimfire. Any pointers? (I already know about the wind effect on a .22, that was today's training lesson). Current zero impact point is is dead on at 50m, scope adjustments are 'supposedly' 1/4 moa per click.

    ChairGun Pro

    Hi Danny,

    Have a look here: http://www.hawkeoptics.co.uk/chairgun.html#.UwnT2vl_srU

There are (free) downloads for desktops and phones. Mainly for air rifle shooters, but from memory there is a selection of rimfire ammo as well.

Also another download for the Hawke range of reticules.

Actually Danny, Iíve just refreshed my memory with Chairgun (havenít used it for a while). There is no rimfire ammo included in the tables, but you can add it as new ammo.

Work on a G1 BC of 0.140 and you can then alter to suit your results.

Hornady has a quick ballistic calculator

    http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-re...ics-calculator

Use 25yd increments, set max yardage for 225 with a 100yd zero, .140 G1 BC and vel at 1060 or 1073 depending on ammo. After calculation look at 1st column for MOA rise at 225yds. You will be close if there is no wind. There is an advanced option also that calculates wind drift which is significant on the .22lr at 200 meters.

We started shooting some informal benchrest at 200 yds here last year. I'm coming up about 20 MOA for 200 yds with a 50 yd zero. That would be a good starting point or a little more for 200 meters. It's a hoot, several 1 - 1.5 in groups at 200 yds, actually pretty impressive

    G'day.

Thanks heaps guys - the Hornady calculator did the trick. Just wondering how the B.C. of .140 was arrived at, or is this just a known factor?

I have printed a cheat sheet to get me started, now at least I have a ball park idea to get me on the paper, then it's a matter of getting to the range early and fine tuning things before the comp.

It is so sweet that people are kind to answer the most basic questions on this site.

    Well done all of you!

The comp is in 2 weeks, range is open in 1 week so a practice session is looking good.
Of course the weather will change, whatever. Lol, I shall get back after the comp.

200m with a .22 rimfire is going to be fun, must watch that wind though.

Now that is about as comprehensive information as youíre going to get

Me, Iíd go for RWS 100 or Lapua Biathlon, but Iíve never shot a rimfire past 100yds.

Let us know how you get on, sounds interesting.

    100 yard zero

With std velocity ammo, you will need about 40-45 inches of come up in your scope or sight. On my unertl quarter minute per click scope that's about 90 clicks counterclockwise. Of course at metres you'll need more but that should put you on the paper. Greg

Yea Brian, and just think, he's trying to shoot flies at that distance! I've held Fly Shoots at 50Y for rimfire - but 200? That's insane!

Good luck mate, and as Brian said, keep us informed about all the fun.

You know, an egg is many times larger than a fly, especially if it were an Emu Egg, but still would be one hell of a challenge at 200M. Or will that be used as the tie-breaker?

I agree Dave, something bigger is needed, I was thinking more in this direction

Good luck mate, and as Brian said, keep us informed about all the fun.

    G'day guys.

The help from the forum has been quite valuable.

The insane rules are not of my choosing, just a committee trying to challenge us all at the local range.
Last Xmas, we had to shoot balloons at 300m with .22 rimfires. Freestanding (no bench) and with enough breeze to bobble the targets.
Not wishing to fiddle with the sights it was a matter of aiming off about 12 feet and watching where the dust spurted up, adjust the aim until a balloon went pop. Many teams (of 2 people) managed to bag all their 5 balloons.

It may not be rocket science but it sure was good fun.

First 200m comp is Sunday 9th March. I shall definitely get back with a report. As one respondent has already stated, it's going to be a hoot. My biggest worry is where to pinch a spotting scope to see the holes at 200m to get me on the paper. The ballistic info offered so far has been a great help.
