    .243 winchester loads

    Hi all,
    I have a Savage 11 .243 Winchester, with a McGowen varmint 1:12 twist barrel.

I was wondering if you all could help me with a powder question. What powder works the best, temperture, most consistant. I was reading up on
Vihtavouri 160, and Ramshot Big Game. Wha are your thoughts?

I use H4895 on bullet weights from 68 gr to 105 gr and it gives good accuracy with all weights, I have never tried it with anything below 68 grain Bergers. Of course with 1-12 twist you will probably not be able to go over 85 grains or so without running into stabilization problem.

H4350 works very well with in the .243 and is temp resistant. None are immune to the effect of temp change. If you will be using 55-70gr bullets, Varget, IMR4064, or RL15 will work better.

I have load data for the RL15 but it's hot enough. My load manuals
only lists 40-43 grains, at 3000-3300 fps for 55-85 grain bullets. Some loads
of other powders list 50 grains max, with close to 4000 FPS.

I have a BSA with 1:10 twist and use 87gr Amax's. After trying quite a few powders, I now use H414 with very good results
