Question Got a question on Stainless Steel/Chrome Moly actions

Is there a test that a layperson can conduct to determine whether an action is chrome moly
or stainless steel? My mentor told me yesterday that the magnet test is not always accurate
in determining whether a action is SS or not. He said some types of SS will attract a magnet
    just like a CM.

Hope I stated my question properly.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Vic, as per our conversation yesterday, I just thought of a way.

On the bottom of the action, in a non conspicuous place, put a scratch mark all the way through the Melanite coating. Put a drop of salt water, or maybe vinegar, on it and see if in a day it rust, ( turns brown,) then it is Chrome Moly.

For those that do not know, Bat Stainless Actions are made of 17-4 at around a H1050 to 1150 age hardening. Since they are age hardening Martensitic Stainless they will attract a magnet just like Chrome Moly.

I test with any of the "touchup blue" solutions..... ie Perma Blue. Oxphoblue, Dicropan IM or T-4, 44-40 etc..... the ones that utilize selenous acid

    Glenn,

When questioned about CM or SS the Rep who took my call at the action manufacturer did not know for sure but the said it probably was.
Didn't sound good to me so I called the retailer where I ordered it from and another phone call was made and It was confirmed
that it was not CM and was machined in SS.

They said when the run for my action type came up they did not have a CM blank to work with. I ordered it last May and thought that 6-7
months would be enough time for them to order CM blanks. But then again maybe it was not ordered correctly.

Rep said I'd have to wait another 6-8 months when the next run came up to get a CM DP action.

I'll explain at the next match....

    Have a great day Glenn

    Al,

Do you apply the touch up blue to the bottom of the action and see if it rusts?

    Just askin.

    Thank you Sir

yeahh..... it's the same thing, just quicker. Selenous acid darkens immediately. And it's more easily stabilized than rust
