30 cal 1.000 long J4 Jackets

I wanted to provide an update from the source regarding these jackets. We are currently running 30 cal 1.400 long jackets on a machine dedicated to 30 cal jackets. This run should be completed by the middle of next week. When it is completed we are going to the 1.000 long jackets.

We will make enough of these jackets to ship all orders within a week after the run starts. We will continue making these jackets until we have enough in our inventory that we will not run out again.

I apologize for the lengthy delays in getting these jackets made. The issues that delayed all jacket production are resolved and specific action is being taken to prevent this from happening again. Right now we are producing record quantities but are digging ourselves out of a fairly deep hole. Once we are out of the hole we should not find ourselves in it again.

Regards,
Eric

Thanks for the update, Eric. I spoke with the always polite and friendly Andrea the other day and she told me they would be shipping within a few weeks. Good news that you'll always have inventory of the 1.00" jackets in stock.
Thanks for continuing to support us 'little guy' home bullet makers. -Al

Speaking of jackets

can someone explain in moderate detail how they are made or refer me to some visual or written data with pictures? Thanks, Pete

Pete,

I'm not going to try to answer your question directly when Eric the Jacket Man is in the room but if you haven't got a copy of Ken Howell's 'Designing And Forming Custom Cartridges For Rifles And Handguns' you got's to get one! You being a brass-makin' wildcattin' dude and all.....

http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Form...5052359&sr=8-2

Amazon shows it as unavailable but I'm reasonably sure it's not too hard to get.

Pete,

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to write up how jackets are made in moderate detail. I can relay that they are drawn from strip using transfer presses. We use what are called 7 Station presses that draw the jacket down in diameter and increase the length in four step. The fifth step is a shoulder set to establish the trim length and the sixth step pinch trims the jacket to length. One station is a dummy station where no forming is done.

The technology and process is fairly old and common among deep draw manufacturers. If you are interested in pursuing this further then researching how any drawn cups are made is where you want to look.

The greatest challenge is not making a cup. One of our machines can be set up to do this in less than two hours. The extremely challenging part is dialing in the less than .0003 TIR. This can take days and sometimes weeks after all the tooling is in the machine. Our standard set up time is 24 hours (3 days).

Regards,
Eric

Thanks Eric

Your explanation is very clear and what I was looking for. I have seen this sort of thing in a past life.

Thanks again,

pete

Update

Due to problems holding to our tolerances some tooling is being replaced. This could delay the start of the 1.000 long as much as another week. It is our top priority and will be resolved as soon as possible.

Regards,
Eric

It looks like another conspiracy from THE MAN to hold the 30BR down.

Problems Continue

The THICK jackets are proving to be more difficult than anticipated. At this point we are one step away from the solution but have been so for a couple weeks now. We have invested too much in this run to pull it now.

The latest solution will be implemented today and if all goes well we should be running the 1.000 long next week. I know that this is the same thing we have been saying for weeks going on months.

Each time the estimated completion time is expressed it is accurate based on the information available at the time. The fact that we have run into so many unanticipated delays is as frustrating for us as it is for everyone waiting for these jackets.

Regards,
Eric

Eric, are you running THICK jackets for the 1.00" long thirty caliber run, or is this another caliber, which is causing the head-aches - just curious if this is going to require some new thirty caliber punches???? RG
