who were the first 4 presidents?

How many of you can name the first 4 presidents in order? Without cheating and using any of the search engines? I, for one, had the names correct, but out of order.

David

Thanks a lot..... you just reminded me how stupid I really am !.!.!

Now I have to go cheat..... Arrrr

The question should be.. what President's should NOT have been President?

Don't even half to go back in time, to get the first one right....

Well, since there has only been one independent elected (Washington), and ever after, the political parties selected the candidates (usually two) to present to the voters, perhaps more interesting would be "name the successful party of the first four presidents, after Washington." Even that's sort of moot, because early on, the president was selected more by the congress, with the voters kind of ratifying that choice. ("Voter's" here meaning "men who owned property.")

To answer David's question, I could name them, but I had to look up the parties that presented the binary choice to the voters. And I'm ashamed to admit I still don't really know what those parties policies were, beyond the state versus federal issue. Bet there were many more issues. Of course, recently, we've turned the elections into a political version of Baywatch. Or to be more charitable, the Emmy Awards. Both highly successful shows, weren't they?

Edit:

So, David's question prompted me to at least look at the early parties. Really interesting, thanks David!

There I was, all smug in my own intelligence, and you ruined it. I knew 3.

Charles,

You are welcome. I seldom ask a question or start a thread. But after all the threads on "General" that have been "political" I thought it would be good to get back to the base. Funny observation, no one has named them here. Just said "I know".

OK, put these in order, Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington.

& when you're done, add Monroe, Adams (da kid) Jackson, & oh, $hit, I don't know who's next.

Obama is the 5th best president ever

Not sure about the OP question but a new poll ranks Obama as the 5th best.

Reagan and Lincoln tied for first.
23 tied for second.
17 tied for third.
Jimmy Carter is fourth.
Obama is fifth.

First, who did the pole? MSNBC? WashPo? NYT?

Second, just shows how many flaming idiots there are.

Jimmy Carter? C'mon.....

Flunked U.S. History in 10 th. grade. Had to take it over in my senior year. If I could name all the Presidents, I would get a passing grade so I could graduate. I remember most of them to this day. Funny what you can do when you "have to".
Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, .....
I've forgot the rest. Been too long and not needed anymore.;)

America has strayed far far from her beginnings and unless she returns there will be plenty more trouble ahead which will only continue to get worse and worse. America was founded on the idea of one nation under God and your forefathers meant it. They weren't just being politically correct for the time. The Liberals and Atheists hate anything Judeo-Christian and will even side with her enemies(Islamists ) to turn America from Conservative values and anything to do with the name of Jesus Christ.Your current president is even regularly courting Islamists. He is acting very unwisely in my opinion.

My dad could rattle off all the presidents in order. Of course, he could also do the same with an alphabetical list of the counties of Mississippi, could transcribe morse code as fast as anybody I've ever seen and taught me enough Tagalog to at least start a conversation with a lady.

God, I miss that man, in case you couldn't tell.

When I think back on him, though, I despair for the future. He learned in a one-room schoolhouse in the middle of nowhere, Mississippi. Yet when he was thrown into WWII, he was sharp enough to commit a large volume of facts to memory, facts that could have easily meant the difference between life and death. He learned via simple exercises like reciting the presidents or the counties of his state.

Can kids nowadays answer any question without first clawing for their smartphones?

Phooey.

Ignore me; I'm just feeling curmudgeonly these days.

Aw heck, don't feel bad, ya got over 450 people in DC that can't add and subtract single digit numbers and come up with the correct answer, technology not withstanding. Most of them can't read or comprehend these two sentences as well.
