First.......it rained. And rained. And rained some more.

We shot the 100/200 in the morning and afternoon, and the 300 at night, with lighted targets. Well, somewhat lighted. We all used lights to shine on our windflags, with less than desirable results. Bullet holes were difficult to see, so sighter s were pretty much useless. But, we learned a lot, and next time we all know what expect.

Congratulations to Richard Pullum for shooting 25 X's at 100, with enough wipeouts to be considered by the Records Commitee. An excellent job.

Thanks to Larry and Beth Deese for having this Match. It was a marathon, shooting three yardages in one day. The night shooting was a challenge, a little more than many of us anticipated.

Larry grilled a fantastic Brisket with all of the fixings for dinner. All in all, a good day at the Range.

Here is a picture my wife took looking out to 300 at the lighted Targets.

Very Cool!!! Love night shooting. The lights on the flags were a nice touch.

But not that affective. The truth is, I had five flags set, but could only see the first one looking up, and the last one in the scope. I was shooting 6 mm, I never saw a Bullet Hole for the entire Agg.

But then, I have terrible night vision. Almost so bad that I don't like driving at night.

The first thing we should do at any match in east Texas is give the trophies to the Pullum brothers before the match to save time afterwards.

Great shooting everyone! Looks like it was a great time. Would have liked to have been there but had family obligations.

Richard Pullum set a new record for 100-200-300 AGG. with a 748-36Xs old record was 747-40 Xs
 
Shooting at Night

Sounds like a fun match. Shooting in the dark of night. Congrats to the winners and all in attendance.

Is shooting at night the wave of the future at Walker County. Just curious?

Unless you have your own private range, practice at night is out of the question. But, who needs practice when shooting at night. Its all about the fun.

Glenn, Larry will do it again. But with a better lighting system.

Hey, you have to do everything for the first time once. We all learned a lot. And yes, after a good night's sleep, I look back and realize I did have a lot of fun.
 
Shooting at Night

OK...so what did ya'll learn? Do I need a night vision scope? No mirage to worry about at night. Was the wind blowing?

I've hunted hogs at night, using those big dome lights on top of the cab of a pickup truck. No wind flags needed for that.

More details of the fun would be appreciated by forum visitors.

Shooting after dark not so bad

For me, It was a blast. It was some trial and error, but on the opposite end of the benches from Jackie, Things were not so bad. I took a few pictures before it got dark, and then one after dark. I should have taken a pic of the lighted target through the scope, but I didn't think about it.

One pic was from the targets back to the benches as we were setting up wind flags before dark. second pic you can see most of us placed little LED lights 2-8 feet away from our flags, and aimed/pointed them at our wind flag. Next was the pic from the bench to the targets when the lights were on. The phone just doesn't take good pics from 300 yards away.

There was no mirage at all. There was just enough wind downrange push the bullet off of the ten ring, especially if you had no idea where your bullets were going.

I thought I had the wind flag lighting solved. But the lights I bought were bright, but non directional. They would be great fo lighting a tent, but not a windflag. I learned a leason there.

My biggest mistake was shooting a 6mm with a 36x scope. With the limited lighting, I simply could not see my bullet holes. I was using the previous target as a sighter for my next target, or at least trying to.

I ordered a March 48x High Master to go on this Rifle Monday. I have one on my 30BR, and really like it.

No excuses though. I got beat.
 
In the Dark

Thanks for the additional info Wes and Jackie. Kinda gives you an idea of what its like shooting Benchrest in the dark of night. I know the Rim Fire guys shoot matches at night,but that’s at 50 yards.

When you’re 200- 300yds away from the target, a different set of variables enter the picture, when shooting in the dark. I’ve hunted at night using a 3.5X12 scope. I dont ever remember encountering any mirage. Not saying that its not there. Visibility was my big issue in low light/no light conditions. I’m wondering if you need a lower power scope when using artificial lighting. Some of those stadium lights would work. You could see some of your flag tails at a distance. Of course that’s not cost effective for this application.

Well,it still sounds like a lot of fun. That’s what its all about. Looks like the Pullum brothers had it all figured out.
