need some suggestions on thread insert help/selection as i keep chipping the insert while trying to true up receiver. have a Howa 1550 that i set up in jig to true face and threads. after picking up thread and after about 2 passes it keeps chiping the tip off and havent had this happen before on Rem's. i use Carmex and for this project picked up a 1.5 pitch in the PC25 grade as i figured it would be best grade.

any suggestions on type and grade for truing a Savage as they ahve interrupted threads and concerned about insert that can take that a well.

any suggestion would be helpful.

have been thinking of going that direction either grind one for boring bar or look at the tools by Warner (believe that is correct name). have you tried the Warner tools?

I bought one of the Warner treader tools and inserts on the reccomendation of a friend and like it a lot. So far I have not done any internal threading(only barrel threads) but my friend says his works great on interrupted cuts in receivers.
Actually, I was very impressed with the HS steel inserts. This is one of the few things I've purchased over the past few years that works much better than I expected it to. That's rare for me, because I seem to always expect things to actually work as advertised.
I think if you get soem of the Warner HS inserts you'll like 'em for what you're doing.

I bought the threader kit, and these are the inserts that I bought. I use the TPMC to do external threading on barrels. Being the dummy that I am, I was ocassionally chipping carbide tips. Not a big deal if you do it in the beginning of a thread, but bad if it's on the last pass or next to last pass. The HS steel has worked great, and I haven't had any problems since. I bought some cutting oil from them too. Stuff works great, just as Bob Pastor said it would. I'm glad that Bob posted the info on the Warner insert tooling. Since then I've told a couple of friends and they bought the inserts and love them as well.
I took this from their website.

Kent,

I had look at that kit that uses the inserts you use but i saw on the tool information that that minimum bore dia was something like 1.375" and just seems to large to chase internal receiver threads. or i have missed something.

i have chased a number of receivers t true them to the bore and have used the Carmex with great results and use them to thread tenons as well. when i first started i chip a few but mainly by not watches and hitting it on reversing or at times at the being of the thread. on this one reciever i broke two tips and lucky it was at the front and not many passes. i had it to the last few passes and it broke about mid-way and did not realize it until the complet pass was done.

The T(P/N)M(A/C)-32NV is probably the best threading insert going for small external threads. Since it is a 1/2" IC (Included Circle) is is not for internal threading of small diameter holed.

Hey Ronnie,

Call Mike Warner tomorrow after 10 am. He will fix you up with what you need. Once you try the HSS inserts, you will never go back to carbide for threading. 1-724-539-9229

Thanks all for your suggestions. just could figure this one out as i havent had a problem like this beofre on a receiver thread and they are just like a Rem, meaning no interruption (unlike a Savage) other than the front bolt hole. i desided to pull my setup down, check things out to see if something was giving way or moving but it all looked fine. hate doing that but at this point its a reset up anyway.

will call Mike Warner tomorrow and see what he has, and may just go to my boring bar and grind a new bit.

out of curiousity how snug/torque do you tighten down the bolts on a receiver in your jig when you dial them in. i dont tighten them super tight but do snug them pretty good.
