This reminds me of a Benchrest match for some reason

The most common two words heard at a benchrest match "Huh? and What?"
When I started shooting a few years ago, I thought most people were very friendly. But there were a few that I thought were rude. You could talk to them and they would just ignore you. I still remember who those ppl were. Now I understand they are really great guys,,,, they are just deaf!
I'm guessing some of the old timers didn't double up when they were a little younger.

I used to shoot trap and it was pretty much the same thing. When it was my turn to pull I would tell the shooters on the line they better sound off or they may get a late bird or no bird at all.

When we were at the East West this year, I went to eat with Don and Juanita Creach. The waitress came up to take our orders and Juanita automatically translated what the waitress had said for me. Easy to tell she'd been around hearing impaired for awhile. Hearing aids help, but neither Don or I can hear with much clarity without them. When I was in college, I'd work up loads for my rifle without any hearing protection. Paying for it now. Shoot with custom ear plugs and the highest dB rated ear muffs I can get now to try to keep what's left of my hearing.

When I started in the high school army cadets in the sixties, sissies used to stick fired .303 cases or toilet paper in their ears. Now, I wish I'd been one of them.
I bought a new Colt Python back when I still had all my hair. Shot a box of 50 full house loads through it and haven't been able to hear well since. It actually hurt to shoot the darn thing but I kept on and on.....until they were all gone. Now, I've got hearing aids that help a little bit. I went to Bristol, Virginia for my first Benchrest match and didn't have any hearing protection. I didn't think much of it until Claude Smith said "commence fire". Somebody saw me with my fingers stuck in my ears and loaned me some earplugs and muffs. Don't know what I was thinking but it wasn't what I should have been thinking.

My wife's audiologist says her hearing is fine. I disagree. 37 years of teaching, with kids yelling in her ear, did it to her. She asks me to repeat as many times as I do to her. Still, she must be better off because she can hear the deer walking in the woods before they come into the yard and I can't.
Funny how younger people don't understand what is going on, even when you explain it. Crucial pieces of speech are missing so your brain struggles to make sense of it, coming up with some pretty nonsensical interpretations.
I have good hearing aids but never wear them because I don't like how things sound. I'm told that the danger is that my brain will forget how to interpret the sounds I haven't heard in years. Certain people's voices are virtually unintelligible to me, even when they are looking right at me and speaking english. If there is any background noise, forget it.
Today, my boss and I were on a conference call. She insisted on putting the speakerphone on mute and talking over it. I couldn't understand her or them. I finally told her to save her comments for the end.

Had a real good friend that for years was an NRA judge, Pistol and High Power shooter. Never used hearing protection. DEAF AS A ROCK!!
He would show up at the house and we would kill a few pots of coffee. We would be talking with no problems then he would start grinning at anything I said. The batteries had gone dead on his hearing aids. He would run home and be right back with new batteries. I loved to mess with him. We would be talking then I would start move my lips and not say anything. Always fun to watch him messing with the volume control.

Had the same issue but I rolled up some patches and stuck them in my ears. I was working with the Turks back in 02 and they didn't have earplugs so they stuck 9mm rounds in their ears bullet first. I tried it and it didn't work worth a flip.

Well, if you can't hear the sound (the sound doodads are dead), hearing aids won't make that any better. They will improve what you can actually hear and you can make better "assumptions". If somebody says something really stupid, and they're not stupid, you probably didn't hear it correctly. Thing is, around here it's difficult because everybody has become a little stupid these days. I say "little" but don't really know since I lead that pack.
