Tenex flat vs round nose

For a short period of time the CMP was offering Tenex ammunition, listed as red box flat nose. Public perception was that this was a sale at 50% of the normal list price of this ammunition.

Today the buyers of the product were advised that it is not the modern flat nose, but is instead the older round nose.

The question becomes: Is the older round nose Tenex worth $95 per brick plus $8 shipping?

My opionion is definitely not. For about the same money you can buy the latest black box, that If I was putting money on it, would outshoot almost all of the older tenex. The improvement in ammo is the single most important reason you are seeing the scores continue to climb over the last several year. I know there exceptions to the rule but chances are 5 year old ammo is going to get you 5 year old scores...if you are lucky.

Updated information from CMP

CMP has provided a lot number. Lot is WE-696.

Someone on the CMP forums contacted Eley in the UK and spoke to the quality manager, and was told W = Tenex and E= 1982.
 
29 Year old ammo?
I am all over it!
I can't imagine that 10x was more than 5.00 a box back then.
 
I bought it for 65.00 a brick in the late 90's. I'd opt for the black box ammo of recent manufacture personally. Ammo has improved immensely since 2005.

common sense, if i had any... would tell me the only difference tween tenex and black box is tenex has less flyers, the competitor that has to score
the highest will shoot tenex or be like an archer with a bent arrow in his quiver and not knowing which one?

Old Tenex

I have some old Tenex of that vintage. I use it on squirrels from a Marlin Model 100 single shot with open sights. I always use target ammo for hunting as it works quite well for anything I would shoot with 22lr. The new Tenex works better in my 52c, no question.
 
Red box vs. black box.....round nose vs. flat nose....Eley Eley vs Remington Eley...new ammo vs. 10 year old...Eley vs. SK....old lubricant vs. wipe it clean...$10 a box vs. $5 a box....pistol ammo vs. rifle ammo...lot abc vs. lot xyz

Shoot every last round you have and compare it to every round you can get a hold of, keep very good records, and then, and only then, will you know what is (was) best! When you get some new ammo you will have to repeat all this over again to determine which batch of your new ammo is (was) best!

looks like they tried to melt the lube off, probably was stored in kuwait after the first gulf war. some generals had it shipped there for target practice.
 
Received my Eley Tenex from CMP today and the bullets look fine. Can see no indication that the boxes were subjected to extreme heat.. Wax on the bullets appears to be fine..Will test some of it on Thursday in all my bench rifles... By the way, my lot number is WE695

"Old" Tenex

Several years ago I had purchased a quantity of Tenex lot # WD 446, without a doubt was some of the finest shooting ammo that I had ever owned, wished I could have got some of the CMP Tenex.
