Strange day at the Range Part 1

I am having an issue with my Heavy Benchrest gun that has me scratching my head. It is a BAT action, Krieger, McMillan 7mmSTW. The gun is shooting great and I finally found a bullet that it likes but I am getting very large velocity variations with my load.

The load is 78.2gr Retumbo, GM215M primers, Berger 168 VLD's, and fireformed brass, .010" into the lands.

At 200 yards, the gun shot ~ 1/2" group even though the ES was 85 and the SD was 25. Incredible really that the group was that small with that ES. Obviously the ES will kill me at 1000 yards.

Do you guys have any tips?? Should I dump the Retumbo and look for another powder or try other primers. Thanks.

Sounds like thrown charges to me.

Ohhh, and that "SD" number????? Forget you ever heard of it, it's bogus political swankering, completely meaningless. The ES is the one you're worried about. ;)
