SS&D actions

Were the Ross Sherman actions the same design as the SS&D Shilen actions (pre-DGA Shilen actions)?
Large bolt, 4-lug actions, all lugs oriented horizontally when locked.

Ron

Ron,

No. Sherman's were large bolt, two lugs, with the lugs locking up on the horizontal plane.

I always wondered why Mr. Sherman chose to build his actions with the lugs locking up horizontally. I'm sure he had a reason...

Justin,
Jimmy Meyers told me the reason his actions have this is that the lower cut in the receiver acts as a feed ramp.
I had assumed that he originated it, but my Shilen/SS&D action, & as you said, the Sherman actions had it around the same time or before the Meyers. Sherman, Shilen, & Meyers all were shooting in the northeast back in the 60-70's, so perhaps they talked & shared the idea.

Ron,

Huh...never thought of that. I'll have to look at my Sherman again.

One thing I thought of in regards to the horizontal lugs is that if the rear of the bolt gets raised during the cocking process, both lugs will have contact at their bottoms, albeit a small amount, with the locking lug recesses. In a vertical lug arrangement, the top lug wouldn't be touching anything. This is assuming everything is dead-nuts square-to-the-world.

Does it make any difference? Who knows...

I found a couple of references that also show the early Shilen actions differed from the Sherman actions.

The pic if the first action is the same as mine.

"Speedy, who earned all but one of his Hall of Fame points with Shilen barrels, added: “Ed was one of my mentors. I have owned almost every type of Shilen action Ed ever made — from the early Ross Sherman/Shilens, to the SS&D (Shooters Service and Dewey), to the 2″ round unlimited actions of which only 10 were made, to the round big bolt Shilens and DGA & DGA-S.” Here is one of Speedy’s older Shilen actions, beautifully engraved."

Ron I was really enjoying that article till I couldn't find page 42. Any chance of getting a copy of the full article?
