Setting a barrel back

Hello guys,

I am wondering. I have a factory rem 22-250 barrel that I took off to make my .308. This barrel has probably 3000-4000 rounds thru it but still shoots fairly well. It is a 26in barrel off of a Sendero.

Can this barrel be set back, turned down, cut down to 22 inches and recrowned to use on a light weight walking varmint rifle?

Pros? Cons? By the time a guy did all that, would it be just as cost effective to get some sort or prechamberd/prethreaded barrel from someone like Douglas and just do that?

Considering the number rounds through the barrel and the work you want done on it, I would save my money and put it towards a new barrel. Order the contour you want and pay once, unless you do your own work and just want a project.
I've done it before and ended up wishing I had started with a new barrel. Just my thoughts.

I'll second Scott's post.............

I've known a couple friends who have tried what you wish, all (3) wish they'd just shot the old barrel 'till they'd had enough to buy a new tube.

How true, how true these words are. A new custom barrel will out shoot just about any factory barrel, Hands down. The only money I would spend would be a new crown, but only if I did it myself.:D
 
Been here and done that!

With 3,000+ down the tube go for a new barrel.
 
Set Back

I have attempted to set back a few Factory Barrels, the single biggest problem is what to set up too. The things are notorious for having different fits that do not run true with one another.

That, and some brands, such as Ruger, are made from an alloy that is just darned near uncuttable. Probably a hammer forging or something similiar......jackie
 
Jamie , You also want to look at the outside diameter of the barrel minus the length you plan on for setback. Some factory barrel contours will not allow (to small dia.) for proper thread/shoulder, length/dia. Something to check on anyway. .........BTW did you find out the twist on your friends 6-284? let me know.
 
Never seen a factory 22-250 barrel that would shoot well with 3000+ rounds

Most factory 22-250 barrels are completely toast after about 1000 rounds.

Most better gunsmiths will not set back factory barrels as the cost out weighs the value and quality of the barrel.

Many would not set back even a new take off factory barrel.

Get yourself a new high quality barrel you and your smith will be much happier.

Well spending the money to set it back will guarantee one thing, it will start acting like a barrel with 3 or 4 thousand rounds that is to say it will quit shooting.
 
also...

who wants to run a sharp reamer into a throat that is hardened and firecracked? Something else to consider when 'saving' a few bucks trying to stretch an old barrel for further use.
Ask me how I know~! HawkEye borescope scared me off from doing it. If not firecracked then I've done it. If 'thousand plus' rounds been through it.....buy a new one.
