wanted to see if anyone here has tryed to build a 30 br on a savage 12 target action i have a savage 12 f class 6 br with the benchrest 3" foreend stock wanted to turn it into a 100 / 200 yd score gun just got in after 5 month a new Krieger 1/17 twist HV barrel and a rifle basix sav2 trigger going to try and get it together in the next few weeks thought some of you guys might have some helpful info or maybe know some else that may have tryed this

I have built a 30br on a savage RBLP target action, it has a hart barrel and a micmillan edge stock. It shoots very well and can run with the customs most days as long as i do my part. I recently sent it to fred at sharp shooters for the evilution trigger. Should be an improvement over the accutirgger.

What does that rig weigh? Did you have to buy a stock blank and inlet it yourself or has McMillian started molding for the Savage? I called them several years ago and I they told me no.

Luck, tim

I have built a couple of Savage 30BRs. The first was actually on a long action with Boyd's varmint stock and SSS competition trigger. It shot ok, but I never shot clean with it. I got 246s, 247s, and a few 248s. I managed to shoot a 245 with 13X once. Frustrating to shoot 13X and drop 5 points. I never could seem to explain the flyers. Of course scores got better with time (experience). Never even shot custom bullets with it. Mainly 125 TNTs. I am still as newbie at point-blanks and still getting better equipment (rest, reloading tools, wind flags, etc). I remember going to my first match and asking what are all those funny things out of the firing line...What is a "wind flag"? Education was soon to follow.

My current rig (below) is a target action, SSS LVT stock, trued and timed by Fred with the Evolution trigger, and Shilen 1:17 tube. Sadly I have only made one match with it at Denton since I put it together and shot a 249-14x. However, that is middle of pack with those boys. Only a few of us show up with factory actions, most are full blown BR rigs. Life didn't allow me to make a match in the last 2 years. It happens. Hoping for a better 2012 season. This gun is also switched over to shoot F/Class style routinely. It barely can make HV weight, forget LV.

I think I still have a lot to learn with even the capability of this rig, but I am saving up for a true custom BR rig. Will be making the action purchase soon. My goal in 2012 with be to shoot clean with it. Maybe somebody can turn the Denton summer winds off for me or school me on reading those wind flags.

Luck in your choice, Tim

I would also like to know about the McMillian stock i was going to use the factory Fclass stock but would sure love to have the Mcmillian

Good looking rifle yep i would sure love to have one of those McMillian stocks

Friend of mine built a 30br on a remington Seven action we took a old McMillian stock that i think had a Hall action in it we got it in and it looks good and the gun shoots pretty good but im here to tell you that was alot of WORK dont think i want to do all that with the savage action

I ordered the stock direct from mcmillan they will inlet for the savage action now, infact they are making me another 2.25" stock now for a hunter class gun i am building this winter. The VFS rig weighs just a wisker over 12lbs with no weight in the stock and a weaver t-36. I have weighted the stock to bring the whole weight to just under 13.5lbs and it balances just infront of the trigger guard.

TIP- when you call MCMillian have your action handy they will need your exact model # and be sure to mesure your bolt spacing to be sure if it is the 2 or 3 screw and if its 4.25" or the 4.40" spacing. Also they will need what side the bolt is on and same for loading/ejector ports.

id love to see some more savages at BR matches, good luck

were you able to use your old action screws and trigger guard?

tiny68 not sure what you are looking for in a custon gun but a friend of mine has a left port Panda with a beautiful red and black marble McMillian stock 2oz jewell trigger not sure what the barrel is the gun is now a 6ppc but you can send the bolt to Kelbey and they will open the bolt face up for about $70 buck i think get you a good 30 barrel and your good to go he told me he was asking $1300 and a new panda action alone is over $1100 now if you are interested let me know and i give you his name and number

The cause of sentence number 1 is sentence number 2. There is no worse false economy than to spend a good bit of money on building a rifle, gas money and entry fees and then shoot bullets that will not let the rifle [ or shooter ] shoot to it's potential.

IMO, the main thing holding the Savage back is the trigger design. I shot a 112 single shot with an SSS 12 twist 6BR bbl my first year of BR. I did buy a 30BR Viper part way through the year to shoot in the score matches. Having a 2 oz trigger really spoils you. By removing a lot of weight from the Rifle Basix trigger I was able to get it down to a safe 4 oz which still seemed like a wrestling match when compared to the Jewel on the Viper.

I eventually sold both my 112's and bought a 40X just so I could have the Jewel trigger. My 40X does have the Savage bolthead conversion and I floated the tang so I haven't totally lost my Savage roots :). I also use the Pacnor bbl nut on my 40X rimfire !

Ray - Totally agree with you. Once I started length sorting my TNTs and Bergers, my scores got better. I got some Cheeks bullets and shot a 249 in a practice match with the old 112 30BR. I agreed with the trigger issue as well. I put Fred's Evolution trigger on the 30BR pictured. It is just a little over 2.5 oz and functions well. Not a Jewel, but pretty good. It is a great improvement over trying to shot BR with a 12-14 oz trigger like I had in the past. I know a custom is in my future. I will own one BR rifle... I want to be sure I get/build what I really want. I still am learning with this Savage. At this point in life, BR is a part time hobby at best. Once the kids have moved out and I have a little more free time, I'll figure out if I really like this stuff and invest in a top in end rig. For now I just want to participate and learn.

I see stories on the web about F/Class guys that show up to their first match and place well or even win. Don't hear many of those stories in BR. Once I finish designing my self-correcting-droppler-guided bullets, then maybe I'll shoot clean... Luck, Tim

I just wish I had been smart enough to shoot that first 30BR Viper in both group and score :( I also wish I had bought a lifetime supply of bullets from Jackie Stogsdil. He made awesome bullets.

If it helps my savage rig shoots clean quite often and has even taken home some wood. So far a 250-17X is my personal record with it. As far as group size goes its allways been in the .2's with a qite a few in the .1's. i cant realy attest to tiny angs having shot so few groups for practice and never having shout in a group match. Most of my goups where early on after the build to tune and havnt realy shot any since. I'm hoping the improved trigger will help with my gun handling and allow me to shoot more free recoil. I agree with the fact that you cant hold yourself back with bullet choice. I tried shooting bergers with mixed results but once i switched to Euber 115's i will never go back. To know a thrown shot was some thing you did and not a tuning problem greatly speeds the learning process.

guess i shot just about everything in the last few years this year i stayed with two bullets 115 7ojive BIBs and 115 Grady Knights and of the two i think the Knights maybe a bit better in my gun and im talking about my panda not the savage one thing you may need to think about is the ojive my gun shoots the BIB 115 with 7 ojive Great and wont shoot the 115 10 ojive at all

Sorry brain Fart 118 bibs and 118 gready knights

I have shot a Savage target action with a Shilen barrel chambered in 30br for a couple of years now. The rifle will shoot with the big boys if I do everything perfect. My best score in a match with it is 250 with 21X's. I have a custom gun also that does shoot better and covers my mistakes better but dont let anyone tell you that a Savage action will not work. I have been very happy with my Savage and still practice with it on a regular basis. I shoot both Cheeks 118 and Berger 115 or grain bullets in this rifle with great results. The Cheeks seem to score better at 100 yards and the Berger 115''s score better at 200 and 300 yards in my rifle.

Very interesting thread!

The local Hunter BR guys have been trying to lure me over to the dark side... they've got me about half-talked into trying VFS next year. I have a Savage Target Action, RBLP, trued & timed by SSS, fitted with a SSS Evo trigger... it's currently fitted w/ a 30" barrel, 6 Dasher 1-8" tw. I was thinking about getting a 30BR barrel for it for the VFS matches so this thread is of considerable interest to me ;)

I'll probably have a nearby gunsmith do the work (Greg Swezey) but I'm curious about the details of what people are using that works, etc.

Thanks,

Monte

"details" as in..???

Seating depth, neck tension.....? Let me say, It's NOT ALL about a heavy tension... Nor Heavy in the lands... Your gun WILL tell ya what works.... Perty Quick..! To be vertical or not to be...

Powder......... H4198.

Barrels last an amazingly LONG time:)... 18 or 17 twist........ No fuss with either... 17 WILL stablize the 135gr Sierra MK (Which BTW is an AWESOME mass produced bullet in the 30BR..!).

Put a 30BR on that Savage and have a ton of VFS fun..!

cale

So... it is possible to shoot credible scores with non-custom bullets? I understand that to wring the last nth degree of performance custom may be the way to go... I just don't relish the idea of burning up hard-to-get custom bullets in practice, etc.
