The Isabella County Sportsman's Club (located just west of Mt. Pleasant, MI) hosted the third 100 yard score match of the 2017 centerfire benchrest season. Jay's Sporting Goods of Clare & Gaylord, MI sponsors our matches with their great $20 gift certificates. Bill Nienow served as our excellent range officer. Bill rides shotgun with Jim Dyke from all the way over from the west side of the state. Steve Robbins prepared all the targets and made sure that everything was in order days prior to the match. Steve does a multitude of tasks behind the scenes. Steve, Alex Murray, and I took care of the target system for the match. Thank you Alex! Many thank you’s to Harry Ross for helping out with the range shack duties - counting donuts, counting money, counting targets, actually counting everything! Dick Wright scored ALL of the targets and brought those darn fantastic Cops & Donuts. These were the low calorie kind as long as you kept your eyes closed. And Dardas Shooters Supply graciously rented a Porta-Jon for the match.

Now onto the results...

First the 'Benchrest Class'...
The Ship’s Captain, Rob Fairbanks (his Captain's duties has been slow on the Great Lakes which affords him time to practice at his home range and travel a long way to shoot at Isabella) started out slow but picked up steam through matches 3 and 4. His steady demeanor landed him the Winner’s laurels with a $20.00 Gift Certificate from Jay’s Sporting Goods, $20.00 cash, and the Isabella County Sportsman’s Club Winner’s Pin. Oh, Captain Rob shot a 250-20X! Rob and Kurt Schultz drive all the way down from ‘up north’ to attend the matches!

Alex Murray started out with a 50-5X and stayed strong throughout the match ending up in second place firing a fantastic 250-19X. Alex won $10 cash for his second place finish.

Third place went to Jim Dyke shooting his Borden Rimrock 30BR. Jim tied Alex at 250-19X. The tie was broken on target #1 whereby Alex’s 5X put him in 2nd place.

The Sandbagger Award (which is always hotly contested) was commandeered by Mike Johnston. Mike fired a 249-15X to win the Award. Mike was the only VFS shooter to fire a 9 the entire course! That is mighty fine shoot’n Mike!

Now the 'Factory Class'...
After a few years off from the Benchrest game, Elton Rountree came back out the Isabella range and won the Factory Class with his 249-8X! Elton used to shoot at the Harrison Range (made famous by Dick Wright). You still have it Elton! And I sure hope that you come out to the rest of the matches! Elton’s efforts won him the Jay’s Sporting Goods $20 Gift Certificate, $20.00 cash, and the Isabella County Sportsman’s Club Winner’s Pin!

Dick Hall, still shooting that secret load that I mentioned in the last range report, fired a 247-7X. Dick was awarded 10 bucks for his second place finish. Very nice shooting Dick! That egg shooting is paying off for you! Good to see you out!

Third place was won by Mr. Harley Davidson, Jimmy Guinn firing a very nice 245-5X. Jimmy drove in on his Harley with his trusty little trailer in tow. It is good to shoot with you Jimmy!

And nailing down the Sandbagger Award in the Factory Class is the world famous writer and author, Dick Wright, shooting his fine looking Ruger #1. Dick fired a 196-3X to walk away with the trophy. I am truly blessed to be able to shoot with you Dick!

Some of us retired to the Judge’s Bench in Winn (just south of the range). They serve great food!

The next match will be a group match on August 19th. Attached is the match schedule. Come on out and join in on the fun – we sure do have blast!

Matt
