The Isabella County Sportsman’s Club was host to the 3rd 100 yard group match of the 2017 season on 19 August 2017. Jay’s Sporting Goods of Clare and Gaylord, MI sponsor our matches with their very generous $20.00 gift certificates! There were 17 competitors in attendance (not to shabby with the IBS Nationals going on in Holton, MI). What really makes me happy is that there were over twice as many Factory Rifle competitors as there were LV/HV competitors!
I want to give several ‘THANK YOU’S' to Alex Murray and Geoff Schmidt for setting up and dismantling the target system, Steve Robbins for pre-match preparation (numbering targets, inventorying, etc., Harry Ross for opening up the range at 5:00am and being our on-site accountant and story teller, Kurt Krug and Big Al Walewski for being range officers, Dick Wright for scoring all of the targets and providing color commentary in the scoring shack, and others that performed unseen tasks to make these matches the huge success that they are! And to my shooting buddy and very good friend, Jimmy Militello for setting up my stuff and packing it away while I was running the computer. Thank you to the 13th power all of you!
Onto the results…
Factory Rifle - Eric Bruce (all the way from the panhandle of Florida) heard about our matches at Isabella and decided to take vacation ‘up north’ and shoot with us. Eric wound up taking the Sandbagger Award in the Factory Class with his very nice 1.1212” aggregate. Nice shooting Eric and y’all do come back ya hear? Geoff Schmidt shooting his very nice .223 hauled in third place honors (and $5.00 bucks) with a very respectable 0.5286” aggregate. Second place went to Dick Hall firing his ‘dark’ .223. His aggregate of 0.4292” won him the $10.00 cash award. And winning the Factory Rifle Class with the top aggregate of 0.3390” is Dudley Pierce! Dudley won $20.00 cash, a $20.00 Jay’s Sporting Goods gift certificate, and the Isabella Winner’s Pin!
(BR) LV/HV Rifle – Jimmy Militello shooting his very fine 6PPC managed to overtake all others in the BR Class and won the Sandbagger Award! Jimmy had a 0.174” in match #4 but wasn’t enough to keep him from winning the award. His aggregate of 0.3472” sealed the deal. Don’t you just hate it when you win the Sandbagger Award Jimmy? Dudley Pierce came in third place by firing a very fine 0.2332” aggregate. Dud won two of the five small groups in BR. Big Al Walewski sure put on a shooting show by also winning two of the five small groups! Al shot a very fine 0.2320” aggregate and won $10.00 cash! Matt Dardas (the editor) won the BR class with an aggregate of 0.2158”. And I tied Dudley for one of the small groups (0.179”). I won $20.00 cash, a $20.00 Jay’s Sporting Goods gift certificate, and the Isabella Winner’s Pin also!
We all had a great time and it is always so nice to see my old (and new friends) at the Isabella centerfire Benchrest matches! Dick Wright brought Cops & Donuts for all that needed some extra calories (that’s all of us!). I also want to say that there is nothing like hearing Kurt Krug and Big Al ‘singing out’ the range commands and adding some color kaboot! Oh, and thank you to Dardas Shooter's Supply for providing the Porta-Jon!
The next match will be a 100 yard score match on September 9. I sure hope to see all of my friends there (and new friends as well!). Thank you so much Dick! And thank you Jay’s Sporting Goods!
