Does anyone have any early 1970's reloading data for this calibre? I'm approaching the current stated max recommended loads with no pressure signs and just wondered how far I can push.
Hambone, If I remember correctly, 26.5 gr. Win.760 or H414 use to do the trick. I believe that was with the then new 30 gr. Berger and I think velocity was around 3650 out of a 24" #5 Doug. barrel. If you are using an unaltered Rem. action you can probably push it a little further but accuracy and primer pockets might suffer a little.
That's pretty much where I'm at now and absolutely no pressure signs. The groups have been opening up and I was wondering if they might start to shrink back if I pushed a little harder.
I'll push till I get pressure signs and and then back off and then see what I can do in regards to distance off the lands.
I use 25 gr. of 4320 for an average of 4175 from my standard .17 R, in a Rem 700. It takes some tapping and a long tube to get 4320 in a .17 case. Those long stick powder grains bridge up real bad. Would love to fine a ball powder that would do as good as 4320. I get fine accuracy and top speed with 4320. I still use the 4320 and haven't tried anything else since 1990. Why change when it works. H-4895 is my favorite powder for the 17 Remington.
A case full will get you over 4400fps with a 20gr bullet.
I mostly shoot 23gr for about 3700fps with 30gr bullet.
I also shoot prairie dogs with 17gr of H-4895 for a quiet load
with a 200 to 250yd range. Kenny
Be VERY careful about loading the .17 Rem! Pressures will jump very quickly and loads that work well in one gun may be TOO HOT in another! I know from experience!
