Question about aluminum stocks

Hello,
I remember reading some years ago that Al stocks were being used in competitions. Does anybody have any information about them? I have a sleeved XP100 action that needs a stock. It doesn't have to be Al, but I am leaning in that direction if I can get information.
I would have done a search, but did not see how.
Thanks for the help.

Benchrest competition?

Gene Beggs stock is aluminum, but I believe he doesn't make one for a round-bottom action. (I got a prototype made for a Stiller Diamondback, and adapted it to a 40-X clone. Some work required.) If you put your XP in a sleve modeled on the Panda, you'd have a bolt-up with one of Gene's stocks.

Don in Redondo made one I thought very neat. Others have described it as ugly. Beauty, as they say . . .

Joel Pendergraft has made some aluminum skeleton stocks for 1,000 yrd L.G. benchrest competition, and there are several commercially available desiigns for 1K Heavy Guns. Rail guns use aluminum.

Main problem for BR bag guns is weight, so a skeleton approach is necessary. Don't know of any except the Beggs that are commercially available.

FWIW

Edit: Of course, the late Shelly Davidson's "Tinker Toy" stock was aluminum. You can search for that, both here and 6mmBR.com

Cps

Walt Perieria (sp?) made them for LV's in the 80's. He had an adapter plate for round actions or direct mount his aluminum or a stolle panda to them

They shot well

Charles E and Cps,
Thanks for the reply. I have an unfinished sleeve that I cut a half octagon, the top, left and right angles and two side flats. I am trying to decide what I can do to finish it and put it in a stock. I have a very old BR stock that I got a long time ago from Doc Alexander that I might use. But the aluminum has me intrigued. I think that I read of one being used by a BR champion that wrote a book about BR about 10 Years ago. Glenn Newick is his name. I think that he had one.
Any photos of either "Tinker Toy" or the Walt Perieria (sp?) stock would be useful. I will do some searches, now that I have an idea of where to look.
Found the Tinker Toy and although it is very interesting, not what I had in mind. Walt Perieira I could not find on the different boards. I will look tomorrow some more.

Thanks again for the help.

Charles E and Cps,
Actually, that should be "Charles and Jim Borden"

Wow. I finally got may name mentioned along side Jim's, even if it was only an accidental circumstance . . .

* * *

CPS was the brand of the stock. And that was what Glen Newick used way back then. If you have his book, you'll also have a picture.

Here is a thread where it is discussed, along with Shelly's tinker toy, a photo of one a guy made up for an X-P, and some other ideas. Lots of ideas in the thread, which might help, since you're not going to be able to just buy one.

Gentlemen
I'm not sure if they are obtainable your side of the pond but we have a company who makes very fine aluminium stocks. There are versions for Palma, F-class, tactical and 300metre plus smallbore.
May I suggest you try www.hps-tr.com
John Carmichael and Robert Knibbs (directors) are fine shots and engineers. I use a Gemini stock for TR (Palma) here and I'm very happy.
I hope I've not intruded.

I have been working on my first complete custom bench rifle, based off a Savage Target action and three recoil reducing systems all built into a complete alu. stock. My own design of muzzel break, a system simular to the HOWA/AXIOM recoil system but designed much sturdier and smoother acting and lastly a adjustable hydraulic butt pad assembly. All this so I can shoot 60 to 70 rounds at the range without killing myself. The project is going to take about a year to complete but I am in the final stages and should be done in a couple of months. I am not quite ready to unvail my creation but if you want to contact me off line I would be happy to share some of my thoughts, ideas and design elements that I have come up with. Hope your project gives you as much enjoyment in the building process as mine has been.
