Panda question

I have a Panda action in a Meridith stock chambered in 6 PPC. My question is how big of a caliber can I go to with out having recoil problems? I want to shoot long range silhouette with a 284. I know this action doesn't have a recoil lug like the F-class Panda and will be recoiling on the tang area. Has anyone done this and with what result?

i know a guy the shoots silly wets..but with 260's and 6.5x47.
with 120-143's
not sure you can get close with the panda.
can you simple add a frt recoil lug ?

IMO, the Panda has recoil lugs sufficient for a mag of about any stripe. I shoot quite a bit with a 308 Win and 190 grainers at 2,600 fps. All my Pandas have a 308 bolt face and reliably handle PPC size cases. I would guess opening up a Panda to take the 0.524 case base might require an extractor mod and would not handle a PPC. But some folks have 2 bolts for that config. Your 284 with its rebated base is the same diameter as a 308.

First let me say I don't know the answer but will, as always, take a stab at it. The Panda is "square" rather than round and fits deeply enough in the stock to almost act as a recoil lug in its own self. I'd try it and see what happens before I fixed it differently. I'm assuming that the action is glued in but don't think it matters as long as it's bedded tightly. If it doesn't have any screws to hold it you might need to add one but don't goof up the bedding...just a screw to keep it from coming all the way out if it wants to...
 
Sorry Bob, I may have interpreted your question to mean bolt lugs. If you were asking about the action lug, the big back square surface on a standard Panda, if it is properly fitted in the stock is the lug that serves the purpose of absorbing recoil from the action itself.

You should also remember that the 284 is a rebated base, 308 diameter base. .524 case

Panda question

We know the back of the Pandas action is the recoil lug.
set deep enough into the stock it's very good.
I think another one forward of the receiver On the barrel would be better for the heavier calibers.
One similar to the Remington

A big bore panda it has a front recoil lug.. Can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
