Nighttime Bench Shooting

I would like to (attempt to) use my 300 yard bench range at nighttime. The only way I can think of doing this is to use one of those powerful xenon or HID spotlights on my bench.

I can run an A/C power cord out to the bench for power.

Does anyone have any ideas of what sort of light I would need, to beam a 300 yard target as bright as day?

Don't beam it 300 yards, put a light 15 feet in front and under the target and beam it from 15 feet.

Night Shooting

You will be supprised how little light you will need. We run 600 yrd night shoots during the winter.

For the target, you only need a little 100w spot light on the taget. Just light the taget right in front shinning up on it. Do not try and light it from your bench.

I would get a little car jumper box that has a reuglar pulg in on it and get your self a little stand alone Harbor freight shop light that you can set on the ground in front shinning on it.

Then you only need a little light on the bench.

We runn the big shop light stands but we have to place them 10 feet away. we are looking at the littel lights. We also run them with a generator.

If you haev any questions, PM and i will send you my Cell number,

I used to zero my hunting rifles at night on one prpoerty where the owner's son had 100 & 200 yard targets lit by ordinary incandescent bulbs off the generator for his irrigation pump. That was plenty of light for our purposes.

The bench was a bit rough, though. :p

I used to shoot smallbore prone at night. The club had 40w fluro lights set in ply wood boxes which were painted white inside, and only shone light out one side and up. They were placed on the ground in front of the target frames. We had a 100 yard extention cord. That would not be neccesary today because you could run inverter lights from a 12 v car battery.
The contrast is good, the black jumps right out .
Ah that Walther, youth and stupidity sold it.

Tiny green or red LED's are available if you want to light up your windflags. Place a batt on the pivot point and it won't affect anything.

I didn't really think about running the generator. I guess it would be cheaper, since I already have that.

I just figured it would be a little easier shining a powerful light from the bench, but your method would definitely provide better lighting on the target. I will try that instead.

This may sound a little "Okie" (why shouldn't it, I am one),but you could set up a stout camera tripod with a small arm screwed to the top and hang a Coleman lantern at the same height as the target, with a backer to prevent the lantern being seen from the bench. Obviously this would not be the way to go for a match, but for your own range, every once in a while, it should be fine.

The simple way

Since it is your land, why not just drive your car or pickup up to about 25 or 30 feet from your target and shine the lights on the target? It would be as safe as any other way of shining a light on the target.

Because then I would have to walk back to the bench. ;)
