Minnesota and Wisconsin shooters question.

I am located in northern Wisconsin, and thinking of attending some matches in Minnesota and Wisconsin this summer. I am tossing around the idea of entering a match or two. ( I didn’t say compete) However, I don’t have a clue what classes are competing at each site. I am considering building a rifle to use but would like to build a rifle that can be entered in a popular class, possibly at more than one site. IOW, I don’t want to build a rifle that can only be used for one match hundreds of miles from me, does that make sense?

In Minnesota, GRRC is a few hours away. Eau Claire National Rifle Club is a couple hours away. Lodi is a possibility, but not on a regular basis.

Is there any of you that have shot at GRRC and/or Eau Claire that can help me with information that could help me make a decision?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have shot at Eau Claire for years. Nice place and nice people. Duluth also has a 500 or 600 yard range. LaCrosse has a 600 yard range. I recommend both. I shoot F-Class Open and all of the ranges offer F-Class TR and Open. I would suggest first trying a match with a rifle you already have before spending a lot of money. That way you get to see what others are using. 308 or 223 will let you shot both classes. See a lot of 6mmBR and 280 and 6.5 x 284

Hi Chip,

I am particularly interested in Eau Claire as it is the closest.

I looked at their schedule on line and I am not sure what I am looking at.

Do you know how many F-class matches are held there? It looks as though there is one in the spring and one in the fall. Not sure.

What does "4 gun" mean?

Thanks so much.

Jim

Eau Claire has several F-Class matches a year. Any time you see 4 gun that means the first day is shot from 600 yards prone and F-Class shoot along side the sling shooters. If you look at one of last year's events you will see F-Class is included. http://ecnrc.org/Flyers11/April1.doc

They do not have match schedule out for 2012 yet.

OK, what I am reading is starting to make a lot more sense. Can I bother you with just a couple more questions, please?

So in the F-class match while shooting next to the MRP guys, how many rounds do you shoot? Am I correct in looking at matches 8, 9, 10 and 11 that there are two "flights" of iron and two of any sight? So you shoot 20?

Thanks so much.

Yes. When you shoot F-Class on Saturdays you get two sighters and shoot a string of twenty rounds for record. You end up shooting 88 rounds, eighty for record and eight for sighters. Everyone takes turns scoring and pulling targets.
For example, depending upon squad you are on you might shoot 22, score, shoot another 22, go to pits to pull for two other shooters, go back to score, next shoot 22, score and shoot final 22 rounds.

There is a "Friendly" match coming up on Jan 8th in Ashland, WI. I don't know much about it yet but if you're interested, PM me for what details I do have.
