JJ vs Sinclairs best front rest

They are both very nice in their own right. The jj might be a little smoother in its operations, but the new Sinclair is no slouch either. Seems to me Sinclair is the one you need to buy, as finding a new JJ might prove to be a little tough. Finding a nice used JJ might be the best answer yet. Good luck!! Lee

Can't speak to the JJ, but the new Sinclair works for me. I am going to be using it for the upcoming season, and I just couldn't justify the difference in cost. I also like the proximity of the windage and elevation knobs of the sinclair over the JJ.
I had been shooting the Gen II Sinclair rest for the last 2 years, and when I saw the new rest I thought "that is the rest I would buy if I could do it over again".
The only issue that I have with the rest so far is the inability to lock the handwheel down against the center column lock screw. As much as I try I can still get the handwheel to raise the center column with the locking screw tightened.
Other than that the rest functions very well, and I felt much more focused on the flags and not where the windage knob was when it came time to run my shots. The forend stop post will contact the handwheel at the bottom of the center column travel, but I don't find this to be an issue at the ranges I shoot. It may affect others who shoot downhill, however.

Mike i have the same problem you have with the hand wheel.I called them up and ask them about it. They said that this was the first time they had herd about the problem with the hand wheel.

that seems to be a pretty common problem on some of the first rests out the door. I think i read that this issue has been resolved? Lee

I recently found a used JJ which appears to be in very good condition for $700.00 + shipping, or do I spend $611.34 for the Sinclair shipping included??????????

Nolo contesto, the Joh Loh is the smoothest and most rigid. For starters, all the threads on the JJ are precision ground.

I just received my new JJ! An absolute precision machine. Smoothe tracks with virtually no backlash! Have not tried the Sinclair but also heard of problems with handwheel.

JJ front rest

Mike
I have been moving and have not been able to respond to any e mail messages.
We are up an running and only need a few days to ship front rest's.
Thank You
John Loh.

I just received the used ( LIKE NEW ) JJ LOH rest that I got a great deal on. It is by far a work of art. I should have bought one of these years ago. This rest is in a Class of it's Own.

I just found an early model of an RFD or RDF (cant remember) and this thing looks great. I think i have finally found a rest i will like. Lee

It's RFD lee, aka Bob Dodd. Everything he builds is nice, he pays extreme "attention to detail". What color is your rest anodized?

It was really easy getting a new JJ Front Rest, I just called John and went down to his shop and picked it up! it sure is nice.....

My rest is just silver, no color. I haven't taken possession of it yet but i have real high hopes. Lee

SkeetLee,

I was hoping you would say silver. We had a bob Dodd rest here a few years ago and it was silver in color. We were selling it for another shooter, and we contacted Bob for an aproximate value. He asked us what color it was anodized, and we said that it wasn't, that it was Aluminum "in the white". Wrong, Bobs reply was that the "white" ones are actually clear anodized and that all his rests are anodized to protect them from oxidation. The ones I have seen were mostly Red I have only seen a few "in the white". I think you'll like the rest and you'll especially like the way it adjusts.

Here is something else to consider, or at least it was a deciding factor in helping me choose JJ or sinclair,...I called Sinclair first, there 25 back ordered right now (1/13/12) I ask the counterman who do I need to talk to about the Sinclair,...he said I am,..so I ask how smooth is the windage nob and how much back lash does it have, he said it's real smooth I am playing with it right now, okay how much back lash,...?...backlash?? Johns answer was yes it is smooth,..nothing like you have ever used, I don't use bolts we build all our own stuff on these rests,...Backlash? he said undetectable, virtually none!
I ask the Sinclair man,...how does your rest compare to the JJ he said there comparable, I said how so,..he said you know there both high quality precision built rests but we don't carry the JJ any more but I think you would like this one.
JJ answer was there is no comparison, I said well I mea....he said again NO COMPARISON my rests are all hand ground hand machined precision built and if I had the two side by side I would immediately see what he meant, and,...and John has them in stock!! By the time you buy the Sinclair ready to shoot ( have to buy a bag) your just a few dollars away from a JJ, and the JJ comes ready to use! for me this was a definite tie breaker. Talking to the guy at Sinclair, real nice guy but he was trying to sell someone elses idea, JJ new exactly what he was talking about and directly answered my questions with not one I don't know, it was just a No Brainer for me! I am sure that the Sinclair is a nice rest probably far above my Caldwell but I feel, I don't have it in my hands yet but I fell the JJ is going to be just that much better than the Sinclair, I hope this may help some. Ken Fulghum of Randolf Machine makes a rest that I bet is in the ball park with Johns, and he is also very very nice to talk to and full of info.
Wayne.
