Holton NBRSA VFS results

Today we shot the annual Harry hoppe VFS match at Holton. We had an excellent turn out with 24 shooters competing. The forecast was for mid 60's with winds at 25-30mph and a chance of rain in the afternoon. Well, the rain held off until we were handing out awards but the rest of the forecast was spot on. The wind at times was brutal but we managed to get through it with some of our flags still standing.

Thanks for posting the results. The conditions were challenging, but still had a great time. The range is definitely going through some major changes. It should be a great place to shoot once it is all completed. Thanks again to everyone at Holton.

Holton's range

It is amazing to see the changes that were done to the range at Holton. The terrible mirage problem is gone!!!! A whole bunch of dirt was removed from the right side of the range, and the backstop/berm has been raised up allowing all the target frames to be raised up as well. This puts a whole lot of distance between the ground and the line of sight. Result, no more mirage, at least very little. Now we have to learn how to shoot in more wind. I always wanted to learn how to shoot better in the wind anyway. For those who have been avoiding Holton because of mirage, come on back.

Also, all the target frames have been spaced exactly the same as the benches. This makes it real nice when setting flages, as the 100 and 200 yard line of sight is now the same.

Grass seeding and fertilization are being done right now, and in a few weeks the whole field will be green and lush.

There is also plans to add 10 to 20 additional benchs so bigger events can be handled. A lot of clearing has taken place on both sides of the range, but especially on the left side where the new benches and firing lanes are going to be. This gives the wind a little more direct line and should reduce some of the switchyness (is that a word?).

Many thanks to the crew at Holton who have been working hard to make this happen, and especially Dan Groleau, who has donated the use of his equipment. And thanks to the whole Holton organization for seeing the need and doing something positive for the sport of benchrest.

I feel the need to let Larry know how much we appreciate his kind words. The guys have worked their butts off getting the range in the condition it is in. There is still plenty to do before it is complete. That being said, Some of the "big picture" will take some time. I truely doubt that the additional benches will be done this year and if their are any done it will most likely be in phases ( 5 at a time, maybe 10 ).
Don't let our dust keep you from coming and if you do come definately bring your taller flag stands. We are looking forward to a great shooting season and hopefully seeing some faces that have not been here in a long time due to the mirage. Like Larry said "Come on back."
