The Rongero Veterans

Father, 26th Cavalry, Bataan Death March survivor, Japanese concentration camp survivor. Korean combat survivor. Retired from US Army, over 20 years

Oldest brother, Robert, 2 tours in Vietnam, 25th Infantry. Retired US Army, over 20 years.

2nd oldest brother, Roland, retired USAF, over 20 years.

3rd oldest brother, Ricardo, retired US Army, 30 years, 2 consecutive tours in Vietnam.

Younger sister, Ester, retired USAF, over 20 years.

I am the only one who got out after 6, USAF
 
Wow, that is quite a pedigree. Thank you all for your service and sacrifice.

My maternal Grandfather was drafted in WW-1, my Dad was drafted into the Army in WW-2, and I was drafted into the Army when I was just shy of 19 years old.

Different traditions, but the same service.

Well, While We're at it...

Oldest Brother, 1924 West Point graduate, killed Kelly Field, 1926 in flight training accident.

Next oldest brother Nelson, flight control officer, USS Lexington aircraft carrier, 1943-1945.

Next brother, Johnny, US Army, 1942-1945, Supply Sergeant, in England and France.

Me, USAF 1956-1978. Libia, Crete, Scotland, Japan, Vietnam support, Korea, Germany, and various states side bases.

Served with Nez at Bergstrom AFB, Austin in Mid Seventies.

But now, rockin chair retired shooting the occasional match.

Jackie, my grandfather was also drafted into the Army for WWI. He was 28 years old when they drafted him. His son, my uncle served in the Navy in the south Pacific in WWII, and his son, my cousin served in the Marine Corps during Viet Nam. Also, I have a 1st cousin who saw heavy action in Viet Nam with the 1st Calvary division and he died about ten years ago from lung cancer. A bullet did not kill him, but maybe agent orange did. Although my brother and I were not drafted, we both served in the Army after completing ROTC training and receiving our commissions. I also had two other uncles who served during WWII, and I have a granddaughter who is a marine serving in Okinawa now. My family has served without fanfare but it bothers me immensely when Bergdahl can desert his unit and get no more than a dishonorable discharge.

deserters

I know bo birddog probably left in the middle of the night but my uncle said in Europe in ww2 a lot of deserters had a 30 cal hole in the middle of their back.
 
Respect for our Veterans

Both sides of my family came with a lot of Aunts and Uncles. 10 children on both sides.

My Uncles and my father served during WWII in one branch of the service or another. Both in the Pacific and in Europe.

One of my Uncles received serious head wounds at Anzio an was taken care of by the VA the rest of his life. Another Uncle had a nervous breakdown after escorting merchant vessels to England early in the war. The Navy said it was from lack of sleep. My youngest Uncle served in Korea and came home with no physical issues.

I was a cold war vet, and the closest I ever came to any combat was when we loaded up during the Cuban Crisis...That was real serious.

My son did 25 years in the Army and retired as a M/Sgt. Every year he hosts a BBQ potluck to honor veterans. He has his head in the right place and I am very proud of him.

Just got home after a trip to Vegas. There were a lot of Vets there wearing some sort of military insignia. My wife said..."Those folks will do anything for a free buffet", to which I replied..."I don't think so." I smiled and just let her statement pass as we had plenty of stuff to argue about without adding that to the mix.

A belated Veteran's Day thanks to all!

Gentlemen, I don't post here very often, but this one is close to my heart. My father and most of my uncles served in WW2 and I served with the 82nd Abn. Div. 3rd Bde in Vietnam. A belated Veterans Day blessing to all who served
