Butch
A friend of mine who lives in CA gave me the following answer. He has a CA CCW and owned a gun store for a long time before retiring. He should know.
A firearm in the glove box or concealed anywhere in
the passenger section of a motor vehicle is ILLEGAL in California.
About the only legal way to carry a handgun in California is locked in
the trunk of the car, unloaded. For absolute safety (against accidental
violation of the law) it is wise for the gun to be in a seperate locked
container. By law, the trunk is a locked container, but if taken out
of the trunk, even to cross a public sidewalk into a hotel, if the gun
is not in its own locked container, for those few seconds or minutes you
are carrying it illegally. All of my handguns are in locked soft pistol rugs (that is
legally a locked container) within the trunk of the car while I am on
the road. There can be no ammunition in the same
container as the gun, but you could, with the gun it its own lock
container, legally have a box of cartridge sitting in the trunk. or in a
bag in the trunk, separate from the pistol case.
When I go to match in Sacramento or Visalia that's how I do it. Sometimes I have forgotten to to take it out of the glove box but since the ammo is in my gun box in the trunk I probably would not get into too much trouble.
CA does not honor out of state CCWs but I think AZ does.
Hope all goes well.
