A fine day was to be had by all at the Harrison Sportsman's Club's 100 yard group match on Saturday, July 19, 2014. This was the largest gathering of Dick Wright's Jackpine Savages that I have ever seen in three years of shooting at the Harrison range! Many fine stories of fishing, hunting, oh! and shooting ensued during the match. It is always good to see old friends and new friends too!

Now onto the meat of the matter.......

Two shooters deserve the highest of mention, Jim 'Hutch' Hutchinson and Kurt Krug. Hutch lucked out and drew the Honey Hole (Bench #1) and Kurt drew Bench #6. Hutch put his luck to good work and proceeded to put on a shooting show that many of us only dream of. His 0.1690" aggregate outpaced the nearest competitor (Joe Hynes) by 0.072". Third place in the Varmint Class was won by Alex Murray. Mighty fine shoot'in Jim! Kurt really had his act together and was thoroughly convinced that the wind was his friend. Kurt had Dick's wind probe and my wind probe at his disposal and outpaced Bob Zimmer 0.3930" to 0.4750". Bob was straining to watch the wind probes three benches down from Kurt. Bob shot two of his fine factory 6PPC's and finished 2 and 3 in the Factory Class.

So here are the results along with photos of the gathering.....

Thanks Matt...

You do a beter job of reporting these matches than I've ever seen.

A bit of explanation... The range faces East. Therefore when we start shooting at 10 AM the sun is directly in your face. We hang towels or tarps from the roof in front of our benches to keep the sun out of our scopes. Woe be unto he who doesn't bring a tarp or towel and some clamps.

Hutch had a .14XX" agg going thru four targets and totally "blew it" on the last group which was around .280". He said it's been about twenty years since he shot on bench one which is right against a berm on the north edge of the range. The "totally blew it" was tongue-in-cheek". His winning agg was .16-- sumpin. Also Jim Millitello shot a bench gun for the very first time and took third place against some tough competition. Truth be known, he's done a lot of shooting in other disciplines and a lot of winning.

FWIW most everybody comes preloaded since we only shoot one agg and it's hardly worth dragging all one's loading stuff for five targets. A few hard cases come and load but they rarely win.

We have added a match to the end of the season. Harrison shooters... write this down.

August 2 Score match
August 16 Group match
Serptember 6 Score match
September 20 Group match

These are fun matches. With the shooters we have they are hard to win. We always go to the Budd Lake Bar after the match for sustinence and a chance for non-winners to drown their sorrows.

Come join the fun.

Dick Wright
