There are 3 basic kinds:
1. Custom built up wood and carbon/glass stocks: Very nice, stiff, well dampened, hard to get, expensive. No paint reqd. Scoville, Larsen, Leonard et al.
2. Fiberglass/carbon shells, somewhat hollow core, action and barrel channel have shell material. Strong, stiff, easier to get, not so expensive, really need paint to look real nice, judgement call. Kelblys, old Lee Six, et al.
3. Fiberglass/carbon shells with filled core, action and barrel channel do not have shell material with exposed core. Strong, stiff, easier to get, not so expensive, some need paint, others dont. Robertson Composites and all the ones he makes for others have very nice finish like a bass boat may have. The others look ok, but judgement call again. The Robertsons usually cost more but dont need paint. Stillers, Bordens?, RC directly et al.
These are all short range. I didnt leave anyone out on purpose, may have forgot something, am working from memory and am typing fast. Stocks are kind of like money, one in the hand may be worth two in the bush.
