i watched the video of gordy,s chambering set up on utube ,my question on the muzzel end what does it look like will the muzzel end look true or will it show barrell running up and down and left and right in cat head

thanks for any insite

I have yet to chamber a barrel where there was absolutely no O.D. run-out on the muzzle end once the breech end of the bore was dialed in true.

If you dial in the breech end in two places, it is highly doubtful that the muzzle would be centered in the spider. It is my understanding that the more advanced practitioners of this method clock the barrel in the action so that it is is pointing up or down when installed in the rifle.

I am not expert b any means, but i do have one experience were the action maker who chambered my barrel didnt clock the run out up or down and the barrel shot like a house of fire. I even asked him while we were chambering if he was going to put the run out at the top or bottom, and he said it didnt matter and the run out would be were ever it falls into place. Like i said the barrel was a dam fine shooting 6br to! When i finally do my own barrels, i will more than likely clock the run out at 12 or 6 oclock. Just seems like the right thing to do. However it is not necessary. At least on my one 6BR barrel it wasnt. If memory serves me right, the run out happen to be at 8 oclock'ish Lee

The runout is usally put at 6 or 12 so that the shooter dosent have to do too much windage adjustment on the scope. On long range rifles the 12 o'clock high position usally means that you dont have to use as much elevation adjustments.

Clocking the barrel will not change any kind of accuracy potential the rifle will have, it just helps eliminate any windage issues associated with the barrel runout from the chamber end to the muzzle end. If you are paying $300 for a chamber job, then I personally feel that it should be done.

Furthermore, I have chambered and installed new barrels on rifles that were not getting new bedding jobs, and the barrel would not center up in the barrel inlet because the previous builder did not clock the barrel. Its just the correct way to do things.
