FNH action barreling?

Anyone barrel an FNH action? Action arrived here with no barrel and no blueprint for the breech end of the barrel. It looks to be a copy of the Winchester M70. Controlled round feed and claw extractor. Same as a pre'64? Conned breech end and extractor cut?

I did. They were not of much help. They had no blueprints for the threads, breech face, ect. Discontinued model. Looks just like a model 70 with the controlled round feed. So i am guessing it is barreled like an old model M-70 with the cone breech and extractor cut. Just wondering if anyone has some first hand experience with this model action.

Blue, Have never barreled a FN "H" action but have done many FN actions over the years and have not encountered any with a coned/extractor cut like a M-70. If you can find a copy of "BOLT ACTION RIFLES" by Frank De Hass it will show you all of the various FN action dementions. All shown are flat, square barrel ends butting up to the front face of the lugs in the action. Hope this helps.

FNH is Fabrique Nationale Herstal. "FN" or "FNH" owns both Browning and Winchester. The FN action that you're looking at and M-70's of the same generation were both likely made at the FNH-USA plant in South Carolina. You know, kinda like Chevy and GMC trucks.

I'm pulling a lot of that from a 50-ish memory, so take it for what it's worth,

I think you will find that the FN has a bigger tennon diameter, but the cone and extractor cuts are similar.

I think I have seen this type of question posed before. What troubles me is the need for a print. What ever happened to the thread pitch guage, a dial caliper, a depth mic and a protractor to measure the action and hand fit the barrel?

It is nothing more than a Winchester Model 70 Classic short action receiver. Chad Dixon with Long Rifles Inc. has done a pile of these, you might be able to give him a call or email and see if he can help you out.

The thread on the FN SPR action is 1" by 16 pitch. Before measuring headspace be sure the rear of the bolt handle is not contacting the cutout in the action body. I've had maybe 3 or 4 that did so and after correcting they changed headspace by 2-3 thou. Also, maybe 20% of the 15 or so I've barreled had misalignment issues between the action threads and the face. I use a piloted mandrel tap from Dave Kiff that cuts the action threads .010 thou over, and with the tap in the action I dial in the mandrel in the lathe and face the action face a few thou. As to the cone angle, I'm not at home right now (gone for a few months actually) but if I remember right it was around 49 degrees. Easiest way to check that is by placing the angle of the bolt face on the side of your compound and adjust the angle until the bolt body is parallel to the lathe ways. You can cut the tenon to .800 length, and after cutting your cone to the correct clearance and skimming a small face on the tennon face, you'll be right around .750" OAL.
