firing pin protrusion

How far should a 22 rim fire firing pin project when it's pushed forward?
Would the firing pin be better round or square?
The rifle is a Stevens Favorite 71.

One of the vintage gunsmithing books ( I know that really narrows it down!) had drawings of the different .22 rimfire firng pin impressions. The author liked the rectangular (BSA International), warned about sharp edges. He said the Martini 12's pin struck too far away from the rim. Do any of you guys recollect that book title?
