fireforming necks

I have some Lapua 6.5x284 cases that I would like to blow out to a standard 284 Win.
What powders & how much should I use to blow the necks open without a bullet?

Why not just run the case up on a 7mm mandrel? Then use 7mm bullets to fire-form to your chamber.

Mandrel will always result in crookedy off-center necks.

I use shotgun powder. I have no idea if it's 'best' but I've used shotgun and pistol powders with wax plugs, paper towel and toilet paper plugs, and nothing at all.

I currently use nothing at all, and shotgun powder because I've got jugs of it.

I start with about 1/3 case, thrown charge, write it down.

poot.

Then try 1/2 case.....

POOT!

etc....

I work up in charge WRITING IT DOWN until I get the sharpness desired on my shoulders.

Here's an old post on the subject.

And I can show pictures if you want.

Since there is NO appreciable pressure in using a wax plug, why worry? I use 1/2 case of Red Dot in a 220 Russian to form to 6 PPC. POP, Done! Same shold work for what you need
