Die hardening

How hard do you need to harden a die? It is a Newlon die, stainless FL that a resizing die reamer was used to make. Need to get it hardened, am getting some scratches in it.

They do fine, industrial, hard-chrome plating. Your sizing die will be as slick and hard as glass. Nice folks.

Gene,

Are you saying that you've had these guys chrome plate your dies and it worked?

How thick?

Sharp interior corners?

I've been trying for 10yrs to find someone to do this......

Thanks

Al, before Hornady began producing sizing dies for the Beggs line of cartridges, I made them myself. I used Metroplex Heat Treating in Dallas. Then I discovered the hard, industrial chrome plating process offered by Mahovsky's and have used them since. I like the corrosion resistance and extremely hard, slippery properties of the chrome plating. I do not know the thickness of the plating, but whatever it is, it's not much. It works great. Give Mahovsky's a try, you will be pleased with their work.

Thanks Gene. Both a friend and I are getting our dies done. I emailed and it bounced, will have to call Monday.

Gene,
Do you use the same reamer to chamber your die that you used to chamber your barrel, or do you use a tighter reamer for the die?

I don't think the chrome plating will create a sizing die from a chamber reamed die. Need to move the brass more for the spring back of it. My die was made with a resizing die reamer.

Billy Stevens has a heat treating furnace and heat treats his dies. give him a call they look fantastic when he's done with em 334-735-2261

I use a resize reamer to make the sizing die. Your reamer manufacturer can advise you on the dimensions. For a ppc size case, I would suggest the resize reamer be ground .003 smaller than the chamber reamer at the web and .002 smaller at the shoulder. This works well with my 220/6mm Beggs cartridges.

??

Do they copper before chrome plating?Or can they chrome straight onto the steel. Most chrome has copper under it.just curious.Jim

Hard chrome.

Most hard chrome is applied directly to the steel. It's the "cosmetic" chrome plating that typically uses a copper or copper/nickel plating underneath the chrome. The copper is used to build up on the surface so that it can be smoothed out for the final application of chrome.

Contact a vendor.

In my experience (hard chrome plating of cutting tools), 0.003" is probably not do-able while maintaining consistent thickness. Again, the typical hard chrome thickness is about 0.0005".
