D1-6 back plate question, cat head/spider

Can you make a cat head out of a d1-6 back plate without adding a piece to the front of the plate? In other words can i drill and tap 4 90 degree holes for the set screws directly in the side of the D1-6 back plate or will the mounting pegs be in the way? I hope that makes since. Lee

I don't know how close the holes would be depends on the diameters. If the d1-6 pins are at 0-60-120-180-240-300. Put the 4 screws at 50-140-230-320. It looks pretty good on paper, real life might be different. Wayne

Look at the setrite or adjust-tru backplates. Some of them have an integral extension on them that would work to drill and tap the holes for the screws you want. I used 3/8ths UNF on several I've made for myself and others.

Just another idea: If you take out the 0 and 180 pins, you can put the spider screws at 0, 90, 180 and 270. Chambering is a pretty low stress operation, so you don't necessarily need all the D1-6 pins.

That's an idea. I didn't even think of. The new lathe is a little bigger than what I currently have and I am just brainstorming ways to get the most out of it as far as barrel lengh go. I have a good buddy that shoots really short ppc barrels not by choice but because of weight. Lee
