Was going to order a fair amount of in stock Barnes bullets from Cabela's on line this afternoon. When I went to checkout mode there was a freight charge as well as sales tax.

On line chat with rep. Rep. stated that now that they were in my state they were charging sales tax on web orders. 3.5 hours away, but charging sales tax anyway. I asked the rep during the online chat if they thought this would hurt their online business, and was told to let them know if they could be of further assistance. I guess this had to happen sooner or later. I assume that the folk's with a Cabela's store in their states have already been paying sales tax on web orders.

Order cancelled. $320.00 Barnes bullets ordered from Midway USA. I was not going to pay $18.00 sales tax in addition to $17.00 freight.

Just a rant. Waverly

Yep. Same thing in MI. I live an hour away. Shipping and sales tax are sometimes cheaper than gas.
You can also have stuff shipped to the store. A friend orders 22 ammo. When it comes in they email it's ready for pick up or ship. There are still all the same restrictions on amount of ammo. Just like a store offer. But, he gets the ammo. 1 box at a time.

Eventually we are all probably going to end up paying state sales tax on everything we buy on the internet. At least if the states get their way. It is a big battle going on right now between state revenue agencies and online sellers. Technically in most locales you are already supposed to voluntarily pay the tax which pretty much nobody does. At any rate do not be mad at Cabellas, it is an agreement they are required to comply with to open a retail location in your state.

I believe there is no legal question about the tax being owed (at least in the states view) on all internet orders. The thing the vendors are arguing about is the enormous amount of additional bookkeeping involved if they have to collect different amounts of sales tax for 40+ different states.

Don't get me wrong I hate the idea but I think it is coming, state and local governments are all looking for ways to increase revenues these days and some are pretty far fetched. Here in Maryland we have a new Rain Tax based on drainage area of roofs and paved surfaces on your property, to me that is far more reaching than tax on internet sales.

Cabela's is coming to Garner, NC (Just east of Raleigh, NC)

Cabela's has broken ground and is scheduled to be open late spring or early summer 2015 in Garner, NC accrors from the White Oak Shopping Center. This will be at the I-40/US70 intersection.

Not saying it is right or wrong, but we have a sales tax up here and the rule is the Province selling is where the sales tax is paid. If the place of purchase is in Ontario the sales tax is 13% if you live in Ontario and buy from BC and the sales tax in BC is 0% that is what you pay.
