Just for serious fun. I have wanting to try a 308 Win. (Lapua Brass) for 600 yard Benchrest. I want to see what it will do on a calm day. It will be on a 60 pound Aluminum Shehan Tracker Heavy Gun. I have picked up the components over time. I found a Krieger 1.350 straight barrel with a 13.5 twist. There are a lot of 308 reamer designs out there. 1995 Palma etc. My question is: what design would be best for Lapua brass shooting 155VLD class bullets? Probably Lapua or Berger VLDS's. I am not worried about neck diameter, I will measure my own brass. I will buy from Dave Kiff. Thank you for suggestions! Samuel Hall

Sam, John Lewis has what he thinks is the ultimate 308W reamer.

Jerry,
Thanks,I will give John a call. Is this a new reamer of his, or the one he has been using for a few years? I spoke with John about this several months ago, maybe I need to call him back. This 308 idea will not replace my 6mm's, it is just someting to play with to see what kind of accuracy I can get on mild days. It will be much easier to spot that big 308 hole on your first shot to help in score at 600 yards! Samuel

I'd like to do a 50 so I could see the first hole. I take it you have Johns # ?

Jerry,
Yea, I have John's number.
One day at Oak Ridge I saw my first shot in the white in the 7 ring and thought for a second to hold over for a 10 on the next four shots. Glad I didn't , I shot a .870 group when the record was .861 at that time. You can see a 6mm in the white when the mirage is almost non-existant, but it ain't easy!

Sam, I talked to John last night and he has two 308 reamers that should work for 600. One is the old standby used when UL/HB shooters used the 308 in a rail or cruiser, this was the Bill Mineman (sp) design, the other is an old design from Orland Gilkerson, both many time winners.

308 seating depths

Hi Sam...the .308 is a great idea,,,we all know how John's 308 shoots!!1 Here are seating depths in my 30/07 with .110" FB..it has aprox .240" of the .275" neck that I like to use ...I try to stay aprox. .030" above the donut area with base of my longest bullet....the .308 has aprox..270 of neck that I like to 'use ...sooooo your could do the math and see how much shorter you could go and still have enuff clearance...I have never had/used any of those great Lapua 155's,,,but do like and use the 185,,,you can see its depth on the chart,,,,thes are all at "Jam length" so if you want to jump em you can add the depth and do the math,,,I hope this helps with your calcs......Roger,,,PS,,,I think .080 would work for you...
