Bench manners

I'm new to centerfire benchrest. I have shot rimfire benchrest since 2015 but unlimited and from one piece rest. Any advice would be appreciated in rest set up, choice of rest\bag, ect. Plan to shoot UBR and IBS score.

Go to the matches and find out. Take a bunch of pics. And be prepared to shoot some, after the matches.....See what your fellow Competitors are using. Might even find some deals.....

The PMA and Seb NEO X rests have a pivoting head that you can lock down once your on each target that helps to make the gun track correctly for score shooting. The rear bag will have to be sized to fit your stock width. Fill the base of the rear bag with heavy sand, and the ears and front bag with play sand. In another thread that I started, scroll down and there's a very good video that will help you out.

One aspect in the short game is contact with the rifle with each shot. I primarily
shoot free recoil. I have recently been changing things up to improve things
supposedly. I will dust the front bag with Benchrite carnuba wax for a clean break.
I recently went to a slick covering front bag and found it to be too slick and went
back to using my old bag with wax. Next little annoyance was my new Protektor
DR flat top bag with their slick covering, Again, my free recoiling system went
too far and the recoil is a bit nuts. Finding a balance takes trigger time to get
comfortable with, and keep things repeatable.

I've all but given up on free recoil. Today I tested holding the rifle and it really seemed to calm down even though it was very windy. During the last match at Chippewa, I had more than 1 really good group ruined from touching the bag, or some other minute problem with force exerted on the gun from somewhere, or the bag fill, ear tension, etc. After 3 years of babysitting this thing, I'm going to hold it at Holton and see how it turns out.

My 2 bench guns enjoy free recoil. Hey Steve. Not about you. Just what I have seen.
You got the highest scope rings? Grow your beard a little longer. Don't shave after Thursday.
And I only touch, the side of the trigger. Don't you pinch the trigger? HUGE mistake.....
Ya. Some guys told me NO. Then I take a video of their THUMB getting SLAMMED by trigger guard....They don't notice. Too busy watching wind flags.
Call Bart about setting up your bags. I forgot what he told me. One soft one hard??? I don't remember....Wow! That really helped.
Talking to Jack and his seminars also helped. I have been too busy to watch his new vids..... I have heard they are very good.
Hayes rest bouncing off the bench. Loose scopes, need a good torque wrench. Gonna spend the money on a $2-3K scope, buy a torque wrench. And have someone, show you how to use it.

I'm very used to shooting free recoil and have moved right into it with centerfire. I'm shooting 30br for score. I see a lot use joystick type rest but I'm not a fan of joystick. We had a Seb when we first started rimfire but I prefer knob controls. I don't see group shooting in future, I'm more interested in score. Should I start getting more comfortable with joystick type rest?

Best practice for shooting score is shooting groups on a windy day with flags. As for the joystick
rests ?? I still like a good knob tweaker, but on the other hand, if you find yourself going back to the
sighter target often, during a crazy day, a joystick will save you some valuable time.

No, I don't pinch the trigger. Lots of people can shoot free recoil. I can't, and I'm tired of trying to force a square peg in a round hole.

"Hey Steve. Not about you. Just what I have seen." How about re reading it? Wasn't about you.

Depending on the stock, bags/bag tension and setup, everything from free recoil to a death grip might work for you. Where the front of the stock is relative to the front bag can also make a difference. Same thing with the rear bag and back of the stock. You just need to start somewhere within reason and go from there.

Some other things to watch for are:
-Stock butt length too long
-Incorrect scope height
-Not staying down on the gun during recoil (follow through)
- Slapping the trigger
-Too little over travel in the trigger

Welcome to the 30BR world. The nice thing about them is...they'll let you know right away when your table manners need help.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Haha. It is a fact that 30br will let you know.
Thank you, Todd

Todde, you did great in your first cf match, against several really good shooters. Do what works for you but keep in mind that a one piece rest automatically puts you in Unlimited class with UBR.

I personally prefer a good joystick rest for various reasons but they can take a bit of getting used to and some are way better than others. They've come a long way and recently, particularly so.

The latest Seb and Rodzilla offerings are a big step up from earlier designs but once you get used to something, you can usually do well with most any of them as long as they're properly set up.

I have a feeling you'll do just fine with whatever you settle on. My Raptor front rest can go nearly as light as a Jewell trigger and it still stays put! Pretty amazing rests. Night and day better than most any earlier rests out there. Not only in how light and smooth it can be but various reasons...One of which is the rotating top makes bag alignment a non issue.

We'll talk more about it soon and if we both go to the match we were discussing recently, you're very welcome to try my Raptor. It's the Cadillac of front rests as far as I'm concerned but he has now introduced a still newer model that addresses the couple of little things that I thought could be better about it for BR.

Thank you. I wasn't thinking of using a one piece rest. I like the class I was in. I know my lack of experience in setting up two piece rest and it shows seeing me fumble around doing it. There was several at the match and things went along at a good pace. I really didn't have time to look at a lot or at least it didn't seem like I did. The match was three relays and the others on my bench were using the same rest. They were kind enough to offer me to use it and I did. It was very similar to what I had and worked out well. I know I'm lacking in a lot (ability and equipment) and am open to any help. This is new to me and I'm wanting to learn.
Thanks, Todd

Tim, When are you going to shoot your next Group Match? Will I see you at Holton?
