6mm grendel

Edwin,
Larry Isenhour did really well with this cartridge in IBS 600 yd. BR a couple of years ago. I campaigned it for one season and didn't get the results Larry did but that is not unusual as Larry is a heck of a good shooter. Maybe Larry will see this thread and chime in . I think he goes by "waterdog" on the forum. I also tried a fast twist 22 Grendel and found I could get PPC looking groups at 100 yds but couldn't get enough vertical out of it at 600 yds,to be competitive.

The 6mm Grendel is nothing more nor less than the old 6mm Firewalker wildcat which enjoyed limited success in the 1990s. It was soon learned that the case capacity was too much for the point blank distances (the PPC being much better), the capacity was too little for the long distances (the BR being much better), and it simply was not worth the extra effort and expense.

Edwin,
Ray summed up the 6mm Grendel pretty well and described my experience with the cartridge. Larry Isenhour and I both had 600 yd. rig's with PPC boltfaces that we were waiting for BR boltface bolts for the rifles . This cartridge allowed us to use these rifles for 600 yd. competition until our bolts became available a year later. Larry had much better success than I did during that season.

I had a 6mm Firewalker (aka 6mm Grendel) in the mid 1990s that I used for point blank Benchrest. It shot well enough but I shortened it to 35mm and it shot even better, as good as the PPC. But guess what? My new brainstorm, the 6x35, had almost the same capacity as the 6PPC so what did I gain for all the extra work? You're right. Nothing. Nobody never said that wildcatters are smart.

Gentlemen,

THANK YOU for your responses.

You saved me TIME and MONEY.

Edwin,
I am sure the 6 Grendel has it's place but other than a autoloading platform I think there are other cartridges that will do a better job.

Here is what i wonder. We shoot Varmint for score out to 300 yards here at our local shoot. I feel like the 30br gets pushed around a bit to much on that 300 yard target and i just dont score that many x's. Would the Grendel be a good 300 meter cartridge or would the 6br in an 8 twist still be better? I went the 6br route with this new haverkamp, and i will soon try it out, if i ever get a stock for it. I am also going to try some 125gr 30cal bib bullets in my 30br. Maybe they wont get as much wind drift as the 118's do?? I need to be real honest though after saying all this. I shot the last 300 yard score target with a ppc and a bib 68gr BT and i was really shocked in the accuracy. I won that shoot, and i think it was the best 300 yard target i have ever shot. So maybe, just maybe, the 6ppc is the best 300 yard cartridge???? And if you cant tell i am always looking for excuses to buy new barrels! LOL!!! I love this stuff!!!! Lee

We have a guy on the westcoast shooting a 6 Grendel very well right now.He is getting 3,000 fps out of a 105 Berger so I don't see it giving away alot to the 6BR,6BRX or 6 Dasher. It finished 4th at the NBRSA 600 Yard Nationals in lightgun and 9th overall.Earlier in the year it was used by a first time lady shooter in Ojai to set a new score record that was later beaten. It was not only her first match but it was also her first time shooting a rifle.I'm not building one myself but it really isn't giving away as uch as some might think.
