Hello,
Been looking at a 40XBR in 22BR. Stock is Remington walnut BR stock. Going for C$2200. incl. Leupold 6.5/20 Target scope/Kelbly mounts. Not sure of the round count. Looks like new, supposedly not used much. Ser. no in the 054,000 range, so I think it may be early 1990's production? Maybe someone knows.
I have the impression that being a 22BR, barrel wear should not be a major concern; should be able to make high round count before accuracy suffers? Comments?. I realize it is not a full blown BR rifle that the serious BR shooters use, who get into custom actions, but for inter-club shoots, should be ok? .........your thoughts.

I run the Club Shoots at Tomball, and just about everybody who is shooting our "benchrest" class uses an all out Benchrest Rifle.

The 22BR, while being a accurate chambering, is not in the same league as a dedicated Benchrest Chambering, ie, a 6PPC, 30 BR, 22PPC short, etc. Your 40X Rifle will, realistically, have a agging capability in the mid "three" to low "four" range. If you are happy with that, then by all means make the move.

But I can't begin to tell you how much Rifle you can purchase on the used market that will be much better suited for your purpose. Keep in mind, any time two or more competitors get together, regardless of how "informal" things are supposed to be, it will get serious.

I have seen this happen many times. A shooter will shell out quite a bit of his hard earned cash, (usually out of ignorance), for something that while being good, is not really good enough for the task at hand. In due time, he gets the urge to aquire something that will be competitive, and then has to spend more money.

Before you shell out $2200, (which isn't bad considering that scope pushes $800), look at the used Benchrest Rifle market. In the long run, you will be happy you did........jackie

Take heed to Jackie's advice and look for a used 13 1/2lb 30BR (the barrel will last forever) with a Panda action, modern stock, and a good quality scope, preferably a Leupold 36x or Weaver 36x and don't look back. ;)

Glen it is a Remington from what I can tell from the picture. I say too high a price. NOT EVEN CLOSE to a full BR rifle.

Jackie, I think you have touched on several good points. Appreciate your comments and experience. Looks like the others are pretty much in agreement as well. Thanks guys for taking the time to send a note.
