.308 Blued Savage

Redrock

Steve Grosvenor
Working with a basic heavy barrel savage (new) in a .308 with 125gr bullets and h322 powder having trouble getting it to group...have done all the normal breakin stuff just wondering is there a goto powder for a .308 shooting 125 tnt's? just have never worked with one of these before. Thanks for any help.

That does not surprise me. I have a Remington 700 HB 308 with a 1 in 12 twist and have tried many loads to try and get it to group well with lighter weight 308 bullets. Never found any good combinations. This same gun will do very well with 168 bullets, and do bug hole groups with 180 Sierra Match bullets.

Best load I've found is 25.3gr H4227 CCI 200 Primer Winchester brass.

Don't know if the IMR 4227 mfg in Australia is the same powder.

Try 34.6gr H322 with the 125s should be close to an accurate load.

If you feel you need to shoot such a light bullet, try the Speer TNT, and hang it out as far as you can, with Varget powder.

That rifle will shoot 155 Berger VLD's and Lapua Scenars and Sierra Palma, with near custom rifle accuracy, with Varget and the right distance to the lands.

Sierra 125g load for 308

Have just developed a load for my CZ550 308. Load consists of 125g Sierra game king,48g of H2206 Rem91/2 primer over all length 70mm. Load is very consistent at around 1/2inch for 3 shots at 90meters,remember this rifle has only a number3 contour barrel,so your savage will do better.Be sure to try a number of seating depths,up against the lands is a good place to start but some rifles like up to 6mm off.Have not had a chance to crono.this one but am hoping for 3000+ from my 24inch barrel.Good luck with your Savage and let us know what works Murphy.

H2206

Not familiar with that powder does it have a US counterpart? And yes were using tnt's might have to try something a little heavier thanks for the response.

redrock, twist is prob wrong, I have same gun, tryed 15-18 lite combo's,,, nothing worked,, went to Sierra MatchKing 168 HPBT # 2200, 44.0gr H4895 fed 210 primer, seat one with bolt then shorten .008, 2709 ft/sec,, for hunting Speer 165 BT #2034,43.0 gr H4895, Fed #210 primer, seat with bolt then shorten .023, 2802 ft/sec,,,,, both loads shoot under .200,, killed 8 does a few years back between 250-465 yards, not a step taken by any of them
PS: start with Lapua brass and you'll be ahead of the game

To Redrock re H2206 powder.

H2206 is a new powder on the market made by Australian defence industries and sold in the USA under the Hodgon banner as is Varget. In burning rate is faster than Varget but slower than Imr3031. Incidently here in Australia,Varget is known as Ar2208.

My 308 will shoot 1/2 inch at 100 with the 125 TNT with: 46.5 IMR4064, as well as 48.0 Varget. H335 and IMR 3031 shoot well but not quite as well.

When I had the stock barrel on my sav 308 M10 46 gr of Varget worked
quite well:D with the sierra 125 spitzter and the 125 tnt. I believe these rifles are 1x10 twist so you are at the edge
of stablility.Yes 1/2 inch goups at 100 were fairly easy in good conditions.
The 168 gr nosler or sierra match were by far the most accurate in
that barrel;)
