    Early Shilen rifle?

My pre-DGA rifle is a 22-250, all original with a laminated stock, a Canjar 2oz trigger (different than the later LP trigger), and came with a Unertl 24x 2" scope. It's either one of the last ones Shilen made in NY, or one that Dewey made after Shilen moved to Texas. Either way, it's tightly...

    Early Shilen rifle?

If I get a chance, I'll post some picts of my early (pre-DGA) Shilen 22-250. Here's an interview of Ed Shilen from PS where he discusses the early days: Regards, Ron

What was the load for the 222

Bud, One classic load was 20.5 gr the old IMR 4198, but notice that the new H4198 Extreme is not the same as the old IMR. The new H4198 is more dense so more can be fit in the deuce. Reloader7, BL-C 1 or 2, 748, and 4895 all got used. A "case full" of H335 also shot very well. If you shoot...

Reaming existing 262 nk chamber to no turn diameter - advisable?

I have a new Krieger barrel that I'm fitting to my Stiller drop port. So I'm thinking of making the older barrel a no turn, just to try it. The worst case is that I end up shortening the barrel & rechambering with the .330 neck reamer. Regards, Ron

Reaming existing 262 nk chamber to no turn diameter - advisable?

I was expanding a bunch of 6BR to 30 this week & found the necks quite consistent with my mitutoyo ball mike. This made me wonder if a no turn 30BR would work. Nominally, an 8.5mm chucking reamer is .3346", which should do the job. Just estimating, (.335-.308)/2= 0135", enough room for .012...

    What is a 222.5?

The 222 has about a .060" longer neck than the mag, so you have to push the shoulder back that amount when forming 222 1/2 cases. The result is a case with a volume close to that of a 223, but with a longer neck. Regards, Ron

    What is a 222.5?

My understanding is that it's made by running a 222 reamer in to the length of a 222 mag. Regards, Ron

    Portable Press Opinions Sought

I have seen two of the RCBS partner presses that were a bit undersized in the 7/8x14 thread. Dies would screw in, but it took some effort. Other than that they were nice & inexpensive. Chasing the threads with a proper sized tap would cure the problem. Regards, Ron

    788 Remington 22-250 Load help

2 comments: 38.0 gr H380 with a 52 gr bullet is a classic load for the 22-250. It's not a hot load, but it really shoots in my old Shilen rifle with Berger match bullets in Lapua brass. Being a ball powder, H380 measures nicely. People badmouth the 788 about rear lugs, stretching, etc...

Lowest Weaver 46x Scope In The Country

Three of us bought the original weaver 46's early on, and 2 of us had the oil dot problem. They went bad sitting horizontal in the off season over the winter, not while shooting. Strange! We returned the scope & Weaver refunded the original cost, the original shipping costs, and the shipping...

    XP-100 barrel

One last time If you are trying to buy yet another barrel that will screw on your action & have the stampings/rib/sight come up in the correct position, YOU ARE WASTING YOUR MONEY. You could buy hundreds of barrels & none be "right", because the position of the threads is purely random on...

we need a humor forum.....until then

Amish Elevator A fifteen year old Amish boy and his father were in a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, 'What is this Father?' The father (never having seen an...

    Land to groove ratio

The old 2 groove A3 Springfield barrels were made on the same machines as the 4 groove barrels by just not cutting the second pair of grooves. So the 2 groove barrels are the majority lands. The govt couldn't tell it made any difference & I've heard several people say they thought they shot...

    Floating reamer holders:

That's a clear explanation of one reason for "no bushing". However, I have no oil flush but I do use a lot of oil & clean chips frequently. Why I don't understand the "no bore is straight, so don't use a pilot" argument is simple: The pilot is maybe 1/8" ahead of the throating portion of the...

    Floating reamer holders:

Why? Is it because running a pilot will damage the lands? Or that the lands run out relative to the grooves? Nothing snarky, I'm just trying to understand your reasoning. Regards, Ron

    Bedding question

Glued & screwed Some of us glue the action in & use screws. If you've ever had a glue-in come loose, you'll be glad to have both. On a similar note, I recently broke out a Stiller action so I could alter the 6ppc drop port to 30BR. (The rifle had been barreled & put together by a name...

    SS&D actions

Ian, I'm headed off to a match today so I will do later. A friend had the G&A issue with that article & I had the PS issue, so I scanned both. Lucky! Regards, Ron

    SS&D actions

I found a couple of references that also show the early Shilen actions differed from the Sherman actions. https://www.riflemagazine.com/magazine/PDF/ri117partial.pdf The pic if the first action is the same as mine. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/12/ed-shilen-has-left-the-range/...
