    What is my next step?

Thanks for the ideas guys, and I am going to recheck every point you have made here when I get home. Also, I have a proven LA stock that has a aluminum bedding block that I have used to eliminate bedding from the equation. Normaly everything stays tight in it. I have tested some very good...

    What is my next step?

    1. Is the barrel on tight? (is it?) Yes, I've had it off 3 times, and It is definitely tight 2. Is the bolt handle touching the stock? No 3. If it's a repeater, is the mag box able to wiggle between receiver/floorplate? Yes, the clearance seems right, and the action is tight in the bed...

    What is my next step?

I don't have a pic of the bedding, but I gave it a visual inspection. A good bedding job leaves the compound with a shiny, clean separation. I clean off any stuff that protrudes into the magazine or trigger well with an x-acto...look the action over carefully for kling-ons and when I put the...

    What is my next step?

I ran 49-51.5 of H4831sc and .010 jump to .008 jam over 25 rounds... No change..no pressure problems It closes quite easy on go and resized lapua brass. I compared it to my F class and I would say it closes very similar to it. Feels good to me. I tighten the barrel with an action wrench and...

    What is my next step?

Thanks Chad, I actually considered trying that, but have not actioned on it. I had a 257 roberts that responded favorably from that. (I have a post on it somewhere) Question: My brass is growing .0015" after resizing, and the bolt closes not firm, nor easy, but in between...do you think I would...

    What is my next step?

I just completed a rifle last week (see pic) It is a 6,5x284, Rem 700 LA in a laminated stock. The bbl is a #4 contour, 8" twist, cut rifled, 27" SS I checked my work, chamber runout is low, headspace is good, brass looks good. The reamer has built 2 other very accurate rifles on #7 and HV...

    270 accuracy?

There seems to be more match bullets available for the 270 then last time I looked. Berger has a 130,140 and 150 VLD That's not a bad route, but make sure your reamer is throated so you can get them on the lands and still fit in the magazine if you build a repeater. Ben

    Which lathe between the two?

I could modify it, I just haven't made it a priority. Like Fitch says...I probably should. Fingers don't grow back! Generally, I'm very pleased with the machine and the work that has come off it. Ben

    Which lathe between the two?

Next time I'm buying stock, I'll include a chunk to make a better spider. Also, I have to leave the rear cover off to use the spider, I am never comfortable with that. I'm already missing 1 finger, (although not from my lathe) and I can't spare any more. Ben

    Which lathe between the two?

I agree the grizzly cathead is dangerous, but it works well and is reasonably priced. A better one can be built when time and wallets affords. As mentioned, the used lathe market is good right now, and that is a good route to go, but a novice beware. Know what your getting meets your needs. Ben

    270 accuracy?

mattri, If your serious about a 270 long shooter. Build one and let us know. Start with the bullet. I would get some 135 sierra matchkings. Brass..either neck down Lapua or use winchester etc. Have a reamer made by PTG or JGS for your bullet/brass setup you chose. Get a heavy barrel, 10...

    Which lathe between the two?

Bigger isn't better with gunsmithing lathes. I'd buy the small grizzly and lots of tooling, gauges, reamers etc. Maybe upgrade the motor with a VFD. Or, get a milling machine and small lathe.

    6.5x47Lapua

The 6.5mm bullet is a wonderful thing. Long and deep penetrating, even with match bullets and its sectional area, it works very well. I do not have a 6.5x47 Lapua, but I do shoot a 30x47 HBR rifle. I have a 6.5x284 and it does have a healthy recoil in a 8 lb platform. It takes a little bit of...

    Bad threading job

tough lesson I learned I picked up a Mauser with hv contour SS 6 groove bbl last year at a gunshop in Southern Maine. The owner of the shop did not know who put it together, but said "its a shooter" Nothing marked on the bbl, but he said it was chambered 308. The stock was ugly as sin, bedded...

    Barrel setback question.........

I can't remember the exact numbers, but Bob Pastor told me that his 6.5-06 bbls taper off after 800 rounds? I think, and he said the gravy is 200-600.... he felt. I have an email somewhere..I'll try to find.

    Barrel length??

You can always shorten it if you don't like how it handles/shoots. It's hard to make a barrel longer though. The way I see it.

    Thanks To All...........

Congratulations.. What cartridge did you chamber it in? Ben

    Roughing reamer or pre-boring?

Nobody really adressed your question I see. Here's my 2 cents worth after chambering a few dozen barrels. First, Boring and drilling are different operations. I do not use a roughing reamer because I see no advantage to it over using a finish reamer only. Also, if you've run the rougher and...
