    remington actions

A 700 action on an old bench rifle is worth ~$500 +$200 if it has a Jewell trigger and some bolt upgrades. If it has a desirable stock, $400 or so more. Barrel...well depends on a lot of factors. Say $0-300. Truing a 700 action takes me about 15 minutes in the shop, and doesn’t add much value...

    6.5 Creedmoor

People are asking me a lot about this round. Has anyone built one around the Lapua Brass? Is it available yet? Reamer? Ben

pics of my first benchrest build in progress

Some people use a piece of copper wire between the barrel and chuck so the barrel does not deflect. I use an aluminum ring that I machined and cut with a slitting saw. Ben

    Repairing front sight screw holes.

I would properly fit a new or used barrel to the action...my preference being new. A damaged barrel is a perfect excuse to make an accurate rifle.

My 22" bbl 22-250 produces velocities a 26" bbl should

It seems small cases approach peak velocity in less barrel length... In some cartridges/powders/bullets sawing a 26" barrel off at 18" only reduced velocity 50 ft/sec from 2700 to 2650 in .308 win. The pressure in the case peaks at some point and no longer adds velocity at some barrel length. I...

    Cerakoting a rifle

I do the action and barrel assembled, bolt out, trigger removed. If I'm doing just a bbl, then I dont spray the thread or shoulder. I put a small silicone plug un the muzzle.

    Safe or not?

Hey Bob, Good to hear from you. I've been working primarily ashore with occasional offshore visit.. for about 13 years ... in Houston, Norway, Singapore and Korea. I get to Maine 3-4 months a year. The rifle turned out fine. Seems to shoot really well.

    Safe or not?

I had to machine the shoulder back and fit a spacer on this M1a1 bbl since too much was taken off the shoulder and front right was past 12 oclock. I think its ok?

6.5x47L 8.5 twist chamber recomendations needed

I've reamed several of them with a PTG reamer, no turn Midway carries.. A wonderful cartridge IMO. Its kind of overshadowed by the 260 now, but I'm not sure why. I built a 700/Brghton 8 twist 5r 1.25x.750... MCM HTG stock ...jwl trigger... that stood out...Maan what a shooter. Ben

    Custom barrel - accuracy expectations

I'll say something else too. For a hunting rifle, that you want to shoot well, but not break the bank...look at the Adam's and bennet barrels. One saturday, Mike and I put a heavy contour one 35 Whelen (F54) one on a BDL. He watched me drop a moose with mine, at 280 yards, so he figured he...

    Custom barrel - accuracy expectations

Roger that. A whole bunch of custom work to a non shooting rifle without replacing the barrel is polishing a turd. I primarily use Kriegers and Broughtons, but also have chambered a few Harts and Shilens. All of them will shoot an X, a few of them will shoot several in a row. Ben

VARGET POWDER and THE 30-06 CARTRIDGE

Gunney, Varget is perhaps not the best powder for the 168 smk's, but it is fine. Look up the hogdon data for varget at their reloading center and see for yourself. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp For 168's they recommend from 47-50.5 grains for the respectable velocities 2710 to...

How do I remove the factory barrel from a Remington 700?

The torch method reduces the breaking torque by 50-75% as a guess. I got the tip from Butch. Previously I was 50% on damaging barrels (some with an aluminum pipe wrench backup!) Now, rarely do I put a scratch in the barrel. Ben

How do I remove the factory barrel from a Remington 700?

What I suspect is the flame is also striking the action, from the inside, and It is heating up just as fast as the barrel, especially, with less meat. I've tried a few different ways, and this works the best for me. Heating the outside of the action up isn't really an option, since my action...

How do I remove the factory barrel from a Remington 700?

You put the torch in the chamber, not on the outside of the action and just warm it up, it doesn't bother the bluing.

How do I remove the factory barrel from a Remington 700?

This is exactly how I remove them also, with the latter action wrench. Take the bolt out and warm up the chamber with a propane torch to about 300F and then you don't need to flog it. Ben
