    Bushing firing pin?

Butch........ Here's some more of my old posting on the small caliber board. A little Jerry Stiller math..... A 0.082" firing pin probably has an 0.084" boltface hole. The hole is 0.005412 square inches. At 50,000psi, this results in a total shearing force of 277.1 pounds. Now use a 0.060"...

    Bushing firing pin?

Butch, As far as blanking is concerned.....the article points to only the boltface hole diameter, as the primary culprit. I do agree that a good f.p./hole fit is good practice.....but unrelated to blanking. This make any sense?? Anyway......my 2 cents. Kevin

    Bushing firing pin?

Years ago........ ......I posted the following on the saubier(small caliber)board. As a reference, and a good read, refer to Precision Shooting magazine, May 2001, page 31, "The Real Reason Primers Pierce" by Jerry Stiller.......you know....the guy who designs actions. Hope this helps. Kevin

    Norma 22 PPC brass questions

Al....... I've the same rifle, and set it up to shoot the 40VMax too fast, with a Leo 6.5-20xAO......at pd's. Worked pretty well! I think I used Lapua, Sako, and Norma cases. My stuff is packed away these days......but I agree with Jackie about the chamber. Kevin

Thoughts men on scope for varmint rifle

Al...........and Al....... You guys cause me to recall old memories of my first PD trips to the Texas high plains, in the early 1990's. My old hunting/fishing/gun show pal and I would, in the early years, "spot" for one another. Talk about FUN!!!......between truths, half-truths, and outright...

Thoughts men on scope for varmint rifle

Al......... Dang right it's "a bit of a pain".......and then some.......especially after shoulder surgery!! For PD's......ALL day long......a side-focus is worth it's weight in GOLD. :) :) Kevin

    Ball micrometers?

Ok Butch....... ......I'll take a "shot". The axially fixed case assumes a case body/case neck concentricity. No allowance for case "banana" effect. What do I win.......or lose?? Kevin P.S. Al N. All is well here....but still a bit hot. I see you're still burn'in up the...

    Ball micrometers?

Hey Al........... My carbide neckturning mandrels seem to leave a very smooth "burnished" neck interior. Also, K&M offered some carbide mandrels with an integral "doughnut" cutter. They work very well for me. Your thoughts? As far as "tenths" are concerned...... Didn't Paul Marquart...

    Ball micrometers?

Butch........ You should have an easy time, getting through town......... That's because, some years back, they installed two elevated "scars" across town. In their infinite wisdom......they also managed to kill many businesses below the scars. On the plus side......the weather's been ok.:o...

    Ball micrometers?

Butch........ Good point. The fixture is mainly for neck-wall thickness runout comparison.....from case to case. The tubing mics.....yes....for neck thickness. But also compared with outside mics, measuring loaded round outside neck diameter. But.......then there's the bullet, itself...

    Ball micrometers?

I have tubing mics, but....... .....my runout fixture, with "tenth" indicator, is much more handy. Kevin

Bought a Cool Old Rifle Today

In 1962...... ....I was 12 years old, and lusted for my grandfather's 22 pump. It was a Winchester Model 61 22LR Octagon barrel. It'll never leave my family. Kevin

    Primer Hardness?

A little something...... .....I wrote on the small caliber board, a few years ago. A little Jerry Stiller math..... A 0.082" firing pin probably has an 0.084" boltface hole. The hole is 0.005412 square inches. At 50,000psi, this results in a total shearing force of 277.1 pounds. Now use a...

    Primer Hardness?

Perhaps...... ......Wilbur meant to type "83 pounds" ?? I recall Jerry Stiller writing a very concise Precision Shooting article, concerning primer cratering/blanking and reducing the boltface firing pin hole diameter. Anyone else remember? Kevin

    Kroil?

Yeah......I think it was the nitrobenzene that put a twist in OSHA's(?) shorts. I liked the old small bottles that you'd get in the old metal boxed Hoppes gun cleaning kits. Actually.......I don't think I've ever thrown any of the little bottles away......keep refilling 'em. All this probably...

    Kroil?

Al....... If I may suggest..........just one more thing. Add an old rag(aka back of an old discarded t-shirt), that is used for various gun cleaning chores over the years/decades......now black in color. A major portion of that black color is.........."old formula" Hoppe's #9.......the GOOD...

best way to shorten action screws?

Al....... You've pretty much got the idea......but I should have made a better explaination. The 20PPC case(how'd you guess that?) is placed on the Whitetail PPU, and the 270/30-06/etc wrapped case-mouth is placed over the neck, to the shoulder. I'm super right-handed.....so I place the...
